
Three School Records Fall on First Day of Hokie Invite

RALEIGH - The NC State track & field programs recorded a series of incredible performances at the Hokie Invite on Friday that included three new school records.
DISTANCE
NC State's distance runners competed in their first meet of 2022, opening the year in the women's mile. Kelsey Chmiel clocked a 4:36.03 in the event to not only take first place but set school and personal records. Her time was also good to rank No. 2 in the nation.
Savannah Shaw took third in the event, running a personal-best 4:39.98 for the fifth-best mark in NC State history as well as in the country. Allie Hays also registered a top-10 program time with her 4:40.56 (10th-fastest) that checks in as the sixth-fastest time in the nation.
Gionna Quarzo (4:57.45), Heather Holt (4:57.49) and Alyssa Hendrix (4:58.02) all represented the Pack in the event as well, tabbing personal-best times.
In the men's mile, Gavin Gaynor ran a 4:00.22 to take first place. His time earned him a spot in the NC State record book as it was the second-fastest in program history and currently is 10th-best in the country.
Brett Gardner and Jake Toomey ran 4:05.19 and 4:13.13, respectively, clocking personal bests in the event.
Sam Bush wrote her name in the NC State record book in the women's 1000m, beating the previous record by seven seconds with her time of 2:43.30.
Bush was joined in a top-10 program mark by Chmiel and Hays, who both ran times under the previous school record as well. Chmiel posted a 2:48.34 while Hays tabbed a 2:50.43).
Sarah LaTour earned a PR in the 1000m as well, running a 2:54.84.
Grant Howlett posted a personal-best mark on the men's side of the 1000m with his time of 2:40.74.
In the men's 600m, both NC State competitors posted times below the prior school record. Kyle Durham ran a 1:19.48 to take fifth and PR while Toomey tabbed a 1:20.53 to chart the second-fastest program mark.
Quarzo and Hendrix achieved personal bests in the women's 3000m, Quarzo recording a 9:37.87 and Hendrix posting a 9:51.73.
Ian Harrison and Robinson Snider each recorded PRs in the men's 3000m. Harrison ran an 8:06.82 while Snider tabbed an 8:10.10.Â
SPRINTS
Ally Henson secured a spot in the 60m hurdles final with an 8.57 in the prelims, good to earn her the fifth-best overall time. She posted another 8.57 in the final to place sixth.
Jada Griffin earned a third-place finish in the women's 300m with her time of 38.48, and on the men's side Alan Alvarez notched the seventh-fastest 300m time in program history with a 35.32.
THROWS
In the women's weight throw, Makala Wright recorded a 16.58m (54'4.75") for a personal best while Mahkayla Hart posted a PR of 16.52m (54'2").
