Pack Splits Up for Penn Relays, Tom Jones Memorial

RALEIGH -- The NC State track and field team is set to compete at the Penn Relays and Tom Jones Memorial this weekend. In Philadelphia, throwers and distance runners will represent the Pack. Jumpers and sprinters will be in Gainesville, Fla., at the Tom Jones Memorial.

Last Time Out
The NC State track and field team competed at the Virginia Challenge and Duke Invitational, closing out competition on Saturday with four podium finishes between the two meets. The Pack brought home two event titles from the Virginia Challenge on Saturday, one in the men's long jump (Von Douglas) and one in the men's 4x100m relay (Cravont Charleston, Quashawn Cunningham, Alexander Lang, and Shannon Patterson). The team also hit 11 ACC Championship qualifying standards.
On Friday, in a day of competition shortened by inclement weather, NC State shined early in its events at the Virginia Challenge and Duke Invitational, earning four podium finishes and two event titles. Cravont Charleston won the men's 100m dash and Javonne Antoine won the women's triple jump competition.

Penn Relays
The Penn Relays, also known as the Penn Relays Carnival, has been hosted annually since April 21, 1895 by the University of Pennsylvania. This year's edition will run from April 25-27 at Franklin Field.
The event attracts more athletes than any other track and field meet in the world, with tens of thousands of participants from high schools, colleges, and track clubs coming together to compete. Athletes from North America and abroad will be represented at the meet.Â
In addition to bringing in an impressive number of participants, the Penn Relays is also renowned for its attendance numbers, often topping 100,000 spectators.

Pack Finishing First
NC State has brought 20 event titles home to Raleigh so far this outdoor season as each competitive category has contributed to that number. The Pack sprinters lead the way with eight event titles and the Pack jumpers follow closely behind with five titles. Relays (three), throws (two), and distance (two) round out first-place finishes for the team.

Two Pack competitors have earned ACC Women's Track Performer of the Week honors early in the outdoor season.

Nevada Mareno earned the honors after an impressive first-place finish in the 1500m invite at the Charlotte Invitational. The Raleigh native finished the race in 4:17.45. That mark sits at No. 10 nationally, No. 1 in the conference, and No. 3 in school history.

Garnering the honors after her first meet of the season, Gabriele Cunningham ran her way to three podium finishes at the Black & Gold Challenge. The senior earned two first-place finishes (100m hurdles, 100m dash) on the weekend.
