RALEIGH, N.C. – For only the second time in program history, NC State Baseball will travel out to the state of California to play a series against the Cal Golden Bears, beginning on Thursday, April 17th at 9 p.m. EST. All three games will be broadcast on ACCNX, and Andrew Sanders will have the call on WKNC 88.1 FM and the Varsity Network app.
This will only be the second time the two programs will match up with one another. In 2011, Cal beat NC State 4-0 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The last time the Wolfpack were in California was in 1998 for the Palo Alto Regional when they played Alabama and Long Beach St.
The Wolfpack is coming off its fourth ACC series win after taking two of three games from No. 14 Louisville. The wins were the first against a ranked opponent this season. The Wolfpack totaled 32 runs over the series, with Sunday's game seeing NC State win 11-1 for their 10th run-rule victory of the year.
PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS:
Friday: LHP Dominic Fritton (NCSU) vs. LHP David Shaw (CAL)
Saturday: RHP Heath Andrews (NCSU) vs. RHP Austin Turkington (CAL)
Sunday: LHP Ryan Marohn (NCSU) vs. RHP Oliver de la Torre (CAL)
Jacob Dudan has not allowed a run in a month. Over his last seven appearances, in 9.2 innings of work, the sophomore has allowed no runs, allowing just four hits with 14 strikeouts to just three walks, picking up a win against Virginia and two saves. He earned his third save of the season against Louisville after throwing four innings for only the second time in his career.
In the ACC, Justin DeCriscio is the toughest batter to strike out. In 115 at-bats, DeCriscio has just struck out just eight times, which results in 14.4 at-bats between strikeouts. His seven home runs on the season are tied for the team lead and are more than he hit in three years at San Diego.
Dominic Fritton and Ryan Marohn remain among the top pitchers in the conference and the nation. In strikeouts, Fritton is fifth in the ACC with 65, and Marohn is right behind him with 60 for sixth. Marohn held a Louisville offense that ranks second in the ACC in batting average to just one run in 6.2 innings.
With 214 walks on the year, NC State is fourth in the ACC and 17th in the nation. In their two wins against the Cardinals, NC State had 29 walks, with 16 in game one and 13 in game three. Freshman Ty Head leads the team with 39 on the year and is eight walks away from entering the top 10 in program history. He is third in the conference and sixth in the nation in the category of base on balls.
