BERKELEY, CA—In only their second-ever meeting and first time as conference opponents, NC State baseball opened the series against California with a 9-0 victory Thursday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Behind four home runs and Dominic Fritton and Andrew Shaffner combining to throw nine scoreless innings, NC State (25-12, 10-6) secured their fifth shutout of the season and first in ACC play since Clemson last season. Fritton also started that game.
Fritton (5-3) threw six scoreless innings, allowing six hits, all singles, and just two walks while striking out six. It was the fifth time he has gone at least six innings this season. Following Fritton was Shaffner, who kept the Golden Bears off the board behind three innings, allowing just one hit and two strikeouts on 41 pitches for his fifth save of the season.
Offensively, Chris McHugh was a triple shy of the cycle, totaling three hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Along with McHugh, Justin DeCriscio, Alex Sosa, and Josh Hogue all homered and Ty Head added two more walks for 41 on the season.
David Shaw (0-4) for Cal got the loss. He gave up five runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in four innings. Logan Piper came on in relief and went four innings as well; he had kept the Pack off the scoreboard up until the top of the ninth, when he would give up three.
DeCriscio, an Orange County native, got the Pack on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the second. The long ball was his eighth of the season to give him the team lead. The Pack built a 2-0 lead three pitches later as Sosa went deep with a home run to make it back-to-back for NC State. It was Sosa's sixth of the year.
Fritton ran into trouble in the first as the hosts had runners on first and second with nobody out, but a strikeout and two groundouts ended the threat. In the second California went on to load the bases, but once again, Fritton managed to not allow any runs to come home.
In the third inning, McHugh hit a ball 437 feet to left field, a two-run shot extending the lead. Brayden Fraasman recorded a two-out single with Hogue on second to make it 5-0. Both Fraasman and Hogue extended their on-base streaks; Hogue is at 14 straight games, and Frassman is at 11.
A 5-0 lead became 9-0 for NC State in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach. Head led off with a single, and McHugh drove him in with a double. After coming up just short and hitting the ball to the warning track in his previous two plate appearances, Hogue got a hold of one for a solo home run to right field. It was the eighth of the season to share the team lead with DeCriscio.
The ninth run of the night came off a Golden Bear error.
