DURHAM, N.C. - NC State Baseball closed its fall schedule with a 7-4 win over UNC in the Battle of the DBAP.
The Pack trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth but quickly flipped the script, scoring five runs on four hits to take control. Christian Serrano led the offense, homering and starting the scoring in the fifth with an RBI single.
Ryder Garino started on the mound for the Pack. He retired all six Carolina batters on 28 pitches, striking out three for a perfect two innings. Both Connor Chicoli and Luke Hemric worked around leadoff doubles in their respective innings but got out of the jams each time. Chicoli recorded a double play, and Hemric retired three straight batters.
UNC struck for three runs off Jesse Guitierrez in the third, but Chet Lax, Truitt Manuel, Harrison Holbrook, and Sam Harris held the Tar Heels to just one run over the final five frames.
Mikey Ryan had an impressive fall, going 3-for-9 with four walks and two home runs. His infield single in the first paid dividends when Brandon Novy showed off his power, hitting an 119 MPH single to bring in Ryan and score the first Wolfpack run.
In the big fifth inning, catcher Drew Lanphere hit one to the deepest part of Durham Bulls Athletic Park, narrowly missing a home run but earning a double to take the lead. A wild pitch and RBI singles from Rett Johnson and Hunter Warren gave the Pack the insurance they needed to win.
Newcomer Maddox Monsour patrolled the outfield defensively. Monsour, who had been dealing with a foot injury in the fall, played right field and secured an out on every ball hit his way. He walked in the fifth inning and scored on a wild pitch.
The Wolfpack went 1-2 in the fall, falling to Appalachian State and Liberty. The 2027 schedule will be released in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to GoPack.com and @NCStateBaseball on X and Instagram.
