NC State (18-9, 5-3) scored in all but three innings, with two frames recording four runs. Ryan Jaros hit his first home run with the Wolfpack and finished with 3-4 with two hits, three RBIs, and scoring three runs. Jaros now has 13 hits on the year, five of which are for extra bases.
Brayden Fraasman also had three RBIs on two hits, scoring twice. Luke Nixon, Justin DeCriscio, and Alex Sosa all went deep, with DeCriscio and Sosa going back-to-back in the ninth inning. DeCriscio finished the day with three RBIs.
Matt Heavner, the nation's leader in sacrifice bunts, added his 10th and 11th of the year to pick up two more RBIs.
Freshman Anderson Nance (4-1) held things down for five innings after coming out of the bullpen to get his fourth win of the season. Nance had a final line of five innings, allowing just one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Both walks, and the Duke run came in the ninth inning.
Andre Healey (2-3) picks up the loss, allowing six runs on six hits, only striking out two. Five Blue Devil pitchers came on in relief, with the Wolfpack scoring runs on all but one.
Heath Andrews started the game for NC State and went four innings, allowing five runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
A leadoff home run for the home team got the scoring started, and the next to Bule Devil batters reached with nobody out, putting runners on first and third. Andrews induced a 6-4-3 double play, allowing a run to score, but no more damage would come.
Four hits in the second inning propelled the Wolfpack to four runs to take a 4-2 lead and not look back. Sosa singled, and Jaros got hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. In a 3-2 count, Head found a hole up the middle to bring in the first run for NC State. The line kept moving, with Fraasman connecting for a single through the right side to tie the game.
Heavner's first sacrifice bunt of the game gave NC State a 3-2 advantage. With the lineup turned over to the top of the order, Nixon singled in the fourth run on the eighth pitch of his at-bat to give NC State some cushion.
After giving up two runs in the first, Andrews responded by striking out the side in the bottom of the second.
A leadoff walk in the bottom of the third for Duke came around to score to make it a 4-3 ball game. Andrews got two fly balls for two outs, but a single put runners on the corners, extending the inning before another Blue Devil single scored their third.
Wolfpack RBI leader Chris McHugh pushed the lead back to two runs after beating out a ground ball to shortstop, bringing in Fraasman for the second time on the afternoon. Fraasman reached third after a walk and a steal of second; no Blue Devil was covering the second base, allowing Fraasman to advance to third on the throwing error.
The game was tied in the bottom of the fifth as a two-out, two-run double made it 5-5 for Duke. The tie game didn't last long as DeCrisio led off the sixth with a double before Jaros launched a home run to center field to drive in what would be the winning runs.
Nixon added insurance in the seventh with his third home run of the season, and in the eighth, NC State broke it open with DeCriscio leading off with another double; a Sosa walk brought Jaros to the plate, where he doubled for his third RBI of the game. Another Fraasman single scored another, and Heavner capped off the scoring in the inning with his 12th sacrifice bunt of the season.
DeCriscio led off the third straight inning in the ninth. In a 3-2 count, he hit his third home run of the season, which was immediately followed by Sosa's fifth home run of the year, which was tied for the team lead. NC State had three games with three home runs this season; it is the most home run in a game for NC State since they hit four against Duke last season.
Up Next: NC State will look to win its third straight ACC series when it takes on the Blue Devils in game three on Sunday, Mar. 30, at 1 p.m. broadcast on ACCNX.
