Four home runs powered the NC State (18-10,5-4) offense, with Josh Hogue, Brayden Fraasman, Ryan Jaros, and Justin DeCriscio all going deep. It was the second consecutive day with a home run for Jaros and DeCriscio.
Duke Starter Henry Zatkowski (3-1) went six innings, allowing just two runs on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Despite the Wolfpack taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth, Duke used nine runs across the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead and not relinquish it the rest of the way. NC State scored five runs across the last three frames but could not cut into the lead as the Blue Devils scored four in the fifth and seven across the seventh and eighth.
Hogue's home run in the fourth started the scoring and was the first hit for NC State in the ball game. It was his fifth of the season as he joined Chris McHugh and Alex Sosa for the team lead.
The Wolfpack lead didn't last long, with Duke scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the fourth. The Blue Devils used three singles to load the bases with nobody out, and the fourth straight single tied the game. Marohn got the first out of the inning from a strikeout, but a double brought two more home for the home team. A wild pitch and a throwing error made it 5-1 before the inning ended.
The Blue Devils again loaded the bases in the sixth with nobody out and knocked Wolfpack starter Ryan Marohn out of the game. Marohn (3-2) got the loss and had a final line of 4.1 innings pitched, allowing nine runs, of which only six were earned on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Jacob Dudan came on in relief following Marohn and went 1.2 innings with four strikeouts, allowing just one hit and walking one.
Chris McHugh, in the sixth doubled in the Wolfpack's second run of the game for his 34th RBI of the season. Jaros and Fraasman each hit their home runs in the seventh to make a five-run game, but Duke responded with three more runs in the bottom half to push the lead back to eight.
It wasn't the cleanest game for the Wolfpack, with three errors accounting for three unearned runs.
UP NEXT: NC State returns to Raleigh for a four-game home stand beginning on Tuesday, April 1st, for a rematch with UNC-Greensboro, who they beat 10-0 earlier in the year. Following the midweek, Virginia comes to the Doak for a three-game series over the weekend beginning on Friday, April 4th.
