RALEIGH, N.C. – Early goals from Jameese Joseph and Annika Wohner lifted NC State women's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Joseph quickly put NC State in the lead with a goal in the sixth minute, finishing off a combination play from Fernanda Soto for a 1-0 Wolfpack lead. Soto logged the assist on Joseph's third goal of the season.
The Wolfpack doubled its early advantage in the 12th minute when Hannah Jibril picked out Wohner's run in the right side of the box. Jibril lofted in a pass to Wohner, who slotted her right-footed shot past the outstretched reach of Virginia goalkeeper Victoria Safradin for the goal. Rosalie Olou also logged an assist as her short progressive pass set up Jibril's cross into the box.
NC State goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas made two saves in the first half to preserve a two-goal lead entering the break.
In the second half, Virginia trimmed its deficit to one when Allie Ross headed home a cross from Maggie Cagle in the 64th minute. Pratapas denied the Cavaliers of a tying goal in the 69th minute when she saved Ross' follow-up attempt after Jill Flammia's long-range shot hit the cross bar.
Pratapas finished the match with four saves as the Wolfpack defense withstood 14 second-half attempts from the Cavaliers.
Sunday's win marks NC State's first victory over the Cavaliers since Sept. 24, 2009, when the Wolfpack won by the same 2-1 score over then-No. 14 Virginia in Raleigh.
Joseph and Wohner paced NC State with two shots apiece.
