Wolfpack Set to Compete at NCAA East Preliminary

RALEIGH - The NC State track & field teams are set for 2021 NCAA East Preliminary action May 26-29 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Twenty-four members of the squad will travel to compete in thirteen events, looking to earn a berth at the 2021 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The top 12 individuals or relay teams in a given event from each preliminary site will advance to the National Championship.
ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
Attendance at the meet will be limited to 2500 spectators per day. Mask wearing will be enforced and fans will be asked to social distance while in Hodges Stadium. Doors will open approximately 1 hour prior to the first scheduled event of each session.
JUMPS
Three Wolfpack jumpers qualified to the NCAA East Preliminary. Chris Alexander will see competition in both the men's long jump and triple jump. Alexander claimed second place in the triple jump at the ACC Championships, earning First Team All-ACC accolades.
Alexander will be joined in the men's long jump by 2021 ACC Championships runner-up Von Douglas. Both men tabbed All-ACC status in the event, Douglas with First Team and Alexander with Second Team.Â
Michelle Cobb will represent the NC State women's jump squad as she is set to compete in the women's triple jump at the East Preliminary for the second-straight year in which the meet has been held.
SPRINTS
Joshua Brockman and Cameron Murray are slated to compete for the Wolfpack in the men's 110m hurdles. Brockman clocked a personal-best 13.85 for fifth place and Second Team All-ACC accolades, and Murray's personal-best time of 13.72 checks in at 13th in the region.
Akira Rhodes will run in the women's 100m hurdles at the East Preliminary. The sophomore posted a silver-medal finish at the ACC Championships, running a 13.06 in the event for First Team All-ACC status.
In the men's 100m, Cravont Charleston will compete for the fourth-straight year in which the Regional meet has been held. In 2019, Charleston tabbed All-America honors in the event at the NCAA Championships.
Alan Alvarez, Brockman, Charleston, Douglas, Junpai Dowdy and Henry Young make up NC State's men's 4x100m relay team. Young, Douglas, Dowdy and Alvarez earned Second Team All-ACC honors with a third-place finish in the event at the ACC Championships.
DISTANCE
JP Flavin will be the first NC State distance runner to compete at the East Preliminary as he represents the team in the men's 10000m race.Â
Kelsey Chmiel, Dominique Clairmonte, Mariah Howlett and Gionna Quarzo will compete on the women's side of the 10000m. Clairmonte claimed the bronze medal in the event at the ACC Championships, good for First Team All-ACC honors, while Quarzo tabbed fifth place and Second Team All-ACC. Howlett recorded an 11th-place finish at the conference championship meet.
Nevada Mareno, Katelyn Tuohy and Anna Vess are set to compete in the women's 1500m. All three Wolfpack women competed in the event at the ACC Championships and advanced out of the prelims into the final.
In the men's 5000m, Joe Bistritz and Ian Shanklin will represent NC State. Bistritz posted a 15th-place finish in the event at the 2021 ACC Championships.
Six competitors will run for the Wolfpack in the women's 5000m as Chmiel, Clairmonte, Elly Henes, Savannah Shaw, Hannah Steelman and Tuohy will line up for NC State. NC State swept the women's 5000m podium at the ACC Championships with Henes taking first, Steelman taking second and Tuohy taking third. Each of the three podium finishers garnered First Team All-ACC accolades. Shaw tabbed fourth place for Second Team All-ACC honors and Chmiel took seventh.
Sarah LaTour and Steelman round out the distance events with the women's 3000m steeplechase. Both competed in the event at the ACC Championships, Steelman taking the title and First Team All-ACC laurels and LaTour placing 12th.
UP NEXT
Members of the Wolfpack squad who qualify for the NCAA Championships will travel to Eugene, Ore., June 9-12.
