COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 21 NC State women's soccer team came up short on Thursday evening in its season opener at No. 15 South Carolina's Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
Despite Krissi Schuster giving the Wolfpack the lead heading into the locker room at halftime, a pair of quick Gamecock goals early on in the second half propelled the Gamecocks to a victory.
Schuster tallied the first Wolfpack goal of the season in the 21st minute, a low strike towards the bottom right corner, off of a Paige Griffiths assist from the left side of the 18'.
Jessica Berlin strung together a strong first half in goal in her collegiate debut with four saves, highlighted by a diving save in the final minute of the first half off of a direct free kick to keep her team ahead.
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Gamecocks managed to take a 2-1 lead. A Tatum Milazzo header goal off a corner kick in the 49th minute, followed by a long strike in the back of the net from Elexa Bahr in the 53rd minute gave South Carolina the narrow advantage.
The Pack tried to find the equalizer in the remaining minutes of the half with six shots (two on goal), but fell short.
NC State returns to action Sunday when it continues its four-game road swing at No. 7 Georgetown. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Shaw Field and the match will be streamed on GUHoyas.com.
