WASHINGTON – Behind a pair of second-half goals from senior Tziarra King, No. 21 NC State women's soccer picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C., as it topped seventh-ranked Georgetown, 3-1.
With the victory, the Wolfpack broke a 24-game unbeaten streak for the Hoyas at home. The win also marks the first time an opponent has scored more than one goal against Georgetown on its home turf since Oct. 28, 2016.
NC State improves to 1-1-0 overall while Georgetown moves to 1-1-0 on the season.
The first half was pretty even, with neither team able to find a real scoring opportunity in the first 15 minutes of the contest. Once the squads settled in, both managed to put three shots on goal, scoring a goal apiece, while Georgetown won six corner kicks.
GU's Amanda Carolan found the back of the net in the 34th minute as she capitalized on a deflection inside the box following a corner kick. Forty-three seconds later, Ricci Walkling was brought down in the box, and Toni Starova converted the penalty kick to knot the score at one.
NC State came out of the locker room with three shots and a corner in the first five minutes, and the aggression paid off when King put away the go-ahead goal from close range in the 51st minute off of an assist from Walkling.
King solidified the win when she netted her other goal of the contest in the 71st minute, once again from close range, off a double assist from Kia Rankin and Anna Toohey.
The Hoyas were unable to put a shot on goal in the second half.
NC State continues a four-game road swing Aug. 30 when it heads back north to face Monmouth. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hesse Field in West Long Branch, N.J., and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+ ($).
