JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The NC State track and field team concluded competition at the NCAA East Preliminary as the squad advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in three events on Saturday (men's 4x100m relay, men's triple jump, men's 5000m). The qualifiers brought the Pack's total to five event qualifiers on the weekend, the most for the program since 2016.
In the closing day, the men's 4x100m relay team (Junpai Dowdy, Cravont Charleston, Shannon Patterson, Quashawn Cunningham) notched a fourth-place finish overall and third in its heat to extend the outdoor season to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. The Pack punched its ticket with a season-best time of 39.17, which ties for sixth-fastest in school history.
Seniors Patterson and Cunningham earned their second trip to the championships on Saturday as they helped the Pack collect its first 4x100m relay All-American honors since 1991 after qualifying in 2016.
Freshman Jamar Davis joined the travel party to Texas with a PR on his second attempt in men's triple jump. The 51'5" (15.67m) mark ranks eighth all-time for the Pack and earned him his fourth top-10 finish in the event in 2019.
Ian Shanklin ended the night with an exclamation point, clocking in at 14:01.32 in the men's 5,000m quarterfinal as he posted the fourth-fastest time overall to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The women's 4x100m relay team (Janel Pate, McKenzie Long, Kylia Wright, Gabriele Cunningham) made noise of its own, outrunning a 15-year old record. With a time of 44.11, the 2019 squad bests the 2004 record of 44.63.
Sprints: Cunningham concluded her 2019 season with a 13.33 mark in the women's 100m hurdles quarterfinal. That time registers as fourth-fastest in the NC State record books.
Freshman McKenzie Long clocked in with a personal-best 23.40 in the women's 200m dash quarterfinal, which stands at No. 3 in school history.
Distance: Dominique Clairmonte clocked in at 16:37.06 in the women's 5000m quarterfinal.
On the men's side, Patrick Sheehan (14:40.30) and Ben Barrett (15:10.00) also competed in the 5000m quarterfinal.
Throws: In Lauren Evans' fourth and final NCAA East Preliminary appearance, the 2019 ACC Shot Put Champion finished her stellar career with a 52'9.5" (16.09m) in women's shot put.
Jumps: NC State notched two top-20 finishes in women's triple jump on Saturday. Javonne Antoine set a season-best mark on her second attempt of the day, recording a 41'8.25" (12.71m) jump, which is good for a top-10 performance in school history.
