Wolfpack picks up fifth shutout of the season
RALEIGH, N.C. – All nine batters in the NC State lineup reached base safely in Saturday night's game, as the Wolfpack earned a 7-0 shutout victory against Delaware at Doak Field at Dail Park. The contest was the Inaugural ALS Awareness Game, as former Wolfpack standout Chris Combs was recognized and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Combs played for NC State from 1994-1997 and was joined on the field for the first pitch by his teammates from the 1997 squad. He was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Laterals Sclerosis (ALS) in May 2016 and has worked to bring awareness to the disease. Fans can learn more about his battle on teamchriscombs.org.
With the win, the Wolfpack clinches the series and moves to 27-20 on the year with its seventh consecutive victory. Delaware falls to 24-20.
Freshman Michael Bienlien started on the mound for the Pack and pitched 5.1 innings to earn his third win of the year. He allowed just two hits, struck out four batters and walked two. Joe O'Donnell took over for him and finished the game to record his fourth save. The Wilmington, N.C., native fanned six batters in 3.2 innings, highlighted by striking out the side in the eighth.
Josh McLain led NC State at the plate with a 3-for-5 outing, highlighted by three RBI, two runs scored and a solo home run. He finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. The double was his Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) leading 18th of the season.
Stephen Pitarra picked up the first hit of the game to start the NC State third with a single up the middle and McLain followed with a single to right field. After an error to move both runners up a base, Joe Dunand ripped a double to left center to drive in Pitarra and McLain to give the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, McLain launched his fourth round-tripper of the season over the left field wall to give NC State a 3-0 advantage. After a single to start the seventh by Brock Deatherage, Brad Debo smacked an RBI single through the left side to score Deatherage to push the Wolfpack lead to 4-0.
Delaware tried to answer in the top of the eighth, as the Blue Hens loaded the bases with one out but O'Donnell struck out the next two batters on a pair of 3-2 pitches to escape the jam.
The Pack carried that momentum into the bottom half of the frame, as the squad added three runs to take a 7-0 lead. Pitarra hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate the first run and McLain's two RBI double scored the final two runs of the game.
NC State and Delaware will return to the field Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the series finale.
