NC State Baseball Drops Series Finale to Snap Seven-Game Win Streak

Junior Evan Mendoza smacks his fourth home run of the year
RALEIGH, N.C. – After clinching the series victory with wins on Friday and Saturday, the NC State baseball team fell short of the sweep Sunday as the Wolfpack was edged by Delaware, 5-4, at Doak Field at Dail Park. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak for the Pack.
NC State moves to 27-21 on the season, while Delaware improves to 25-20. Burk FitzPatrick earned the win for the Blue Hens with four innings in relief, while Dalton Feeney took the loss for the Wolfpack.
Despite the seven-game winning streak ending, the Wolfpack has outscored opponents, 64-16, in its last eight games. NCSU owns a team batting average of .333 during the stretch and has limited opponents to a .194 clip. With seven more games on the regular season schedule, NC State is hitting its stride and will have the luxury of playing four of those contests at home.
Delaware struck first to own its first lead of the series after a solo home run by Calvin Scott in the top of the first, but NC State countered in the bottom half with three runs to go out front.
After a single up the middle by Josh McLain and a walk by Brad Debo, Joe Dunand ripped an RBI single to right center to push across the first run for the Wolfpack. Brett Kinneman followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right field, as Debo tagged and scored to give NC State a 2-1 advantage.
Will Wilson extended the Pack's lead to 3-1 with his 16th double of the year to drive in Dunand from first base. His total is tied for sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and leads all freshmen in the league.
The Blue Hens countered with a big seventh inning, plating three runs in the frame to take a 5-3 lead. Kyle Baker had the big hit in the inning with a two RBI single to left field with the bases loaded and three batters later Jeremy Ake singled to score a run.
Evan Mendoza led off the bottom of the inning for NC State with a solo home run over the left field wall to try and spark a rally. It was his fourth of the year and helped trim the score to 5-4, but unfortunately Delaware's FitzPatrick rebounded to get out of the frame.
NC State reliever Cody Beckman struck out the side in the top of the eighth with three looking strikeouts to give the Wolfpack momentum, but the squad was unable to capitalize on it. Brian Brown started on the mound and pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts before departing.
The Wolfpack will return to action Wednesday evening against UNCW at 6 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. Trea Turner bobbleheads will be given away to the first 450 fans through the gates, for more information click here.
