Freshman Kent Klyman earns first collegiate win
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team completed the season sweep against UNCW with a 6-3 win Wednesday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack won the first meeting between the teams this season in Wilmington, 8-5, on March 8.
Â
NC State has now won eight of its last nine games and moves to 28-21, while UNCW falls to 24-24. Freshman Kent Klyman earned his first collegiate win with two no-hit innings of relief, while Joe O'Donnell slammed the door late to pick up his fifth save. For the Seahawks, Blake Deatherage, younger brother of the Wolfpack's Brock Deatherage, suffered the loss.
Â
Brett Kinneman led NC State at the plate with a perfect 2-for-2 performance, highlighted by his eighth home run of the year. Stephen Pitarra also tallied a multi-hit outing with a pair of singles and a run scored.
Â
Andy Cosgrove hit his third homer of the year in the contest and scored twice, while Brad Debo, Josh McLain and Evan Mendoza each had one hit.
Â
NC State struck first in the bottom of the second, as Brett Kinneman smashed a solo homer over the left field wall to give the squad a 1-0 lead. The Wolfpack added two runs in the third inning after an RBI double by Debo and a sacrifice fly by Joe Dunand.
Â
UNCW countered with three runs in the fifth to even the score at three apiece. After loading the bases, Nick Feight singled through the left side to plate a pair of runs and Brian Mims followed with an RBI single to knot the tally.
Â
The Wolfpack answered in the bottom half with a run following singles to start the frame by Pitarra and McLain. Kinneman's two-out single through the right side allowed Pitarra to score from second base to give NCSU a 4-3 advantage.
Â
NC State scored its final two runs of the game in the sixth, after Mendoza doubled and later scored on a passed ball and Cosgrove homered to left field to make it 6-3.
Â
The Seahawks threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs but the Wolfpack's O'Donnell entered the game and struck out the batter swinging to escape the jam. O'Donnell closed out the game with a swinging and looking strikeout to preserve his team-leading fifth save of the season.
Â
Kinneman and Mendoza each extended their reached base safely streaks to nine and the Wolfpack remains unbeaten on the season when recording more hits (8-5) than its opponent at 23-0.
Â
NC State returns to action this weekend when it travels to Pittsburgh for a three-game series against the Panthers. Friday's game is slated for 6 p.m. at Charles L. Cost Field.
