NC State baseball won its final midweek game of the season Monday at Doak Field
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 6 NC State baseball avenged a road loss from a week ago with a 6-1 win over No. 17 East Carolina on Monday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
ECU (26-15) took a 1-0 lead in the second before NC State (29-11) seized command with a four-run rally highlighted by Evan Mendoza's second homer of the year, a three-run shot to left. The Pack added one in the sixth and another in the eighth to set the final 6-1.
Mendoza extended NC State's longest hitting streak of the year to 14 games with a 2-for-4 performance and a career-high four RBIs. Brett Kinneman doubled for the eighth time to drive in the first Wolfpack run of the ballgame, finishing 1-for-3 including two runs and a walk. Kinneman has contributed at least one hit in 13 of 14 career starts.
Chance Shepard scored once in a 1-for-2 outing with a walk. Preston Palmeiro scored twice and walked once in a 1-for-3 evening. Brock Deatherage went 1-for-4, reaching base for the 34th game of the last 35.
Wolfpack starter Ryan Williamson (7-1) scored the win, equaling the team-leading wins total from 2015 shared by Joe O'Donnell and Brian Brown. The last NC State pitcher with more wins was Carlos Rodon's 10 in 2013. Williamson matched a season-long working 6 2/3, allowing one earned on six hits and three walks, striking out a pair.
Evan Brabrand held the Pirates hitless for the next inning, walking one and fanning one. Travis Orwig retired the only batter he faced. Tommy DeJuneas allowed two hits in the ninth.
NC State returns to action Friday at 6:30 PM on ESPN3, hosting the first of three against Duke. Radio coverage will be handled by 88.1 WKNC and 1550 WCLY. Fans can follow along with live stats on GoPack.com or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
