RALEIGH, N.C. - Brian Jarosinski and Kyle George drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth Saturday to lift Maryland to an 8-7 come-from-behind victory over NC State at Doak Field. The win was Maryland's second in as many games in the three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series and assured the Terrapins of at least a series victory over the Wolfpack.
Maryland improved to 18-28 overall with the win, 6-13 in the ACC. NC State, which had a 7-4 lead after seven innings, fell to 37-12 overall and 13-7 in the ACC. NC State lost a one-run game for the first time all season after winning its first nine. Terrapins reliever Matt Basinger (1-0) got the win with three hitless innings of relief. He allowed one unearned run, struck out one and did not issue a walk. Steve Schmoll came out of the bullpen to earn his fourth save of the season and his second in as many games. Wolfpack reliever Joey Devine (4-2) got the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 1-2/3 innings. He walked one, hit a batter and struck out three. Devine, who came into the game tied for the NCAA lead with 13 saves, now has blown four of his last seven save opportunities.
The Terps jumped on NC State starter Vern Sterry in the top of the first. Mike Cosantino and Anthony Buffone led off with singles, and after Ray Gemmill bunted into a force play, Justin Maxwell flied to right to advance Buffone to third base. Buffone scored when Will Frazier lined a single off of Sterry's thigh and into foul territory. After throwing a few warm-up tosses to make sure he was okay, Sterry faced Jason Maxey, who rolled a single to right field, scoring Gemmill from second base to give the Terps a 2-0 lead.
The Pack scored once in the bottom of the inning. Matt Camp led off with a four-pitch walk and went to second on Lee Mezistrano's groundout. Justin Riley blooped a Texas-League single to shallow center, and Colt Morton hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Camp and cut the lead in half at 2-1.
Maryland made it 3-1 on Gemmill's solo home run leading off the top of the third, and the Wolfpack cut the lead back to a run in the bottom of the inning. Chad Orvella led off with a single to right field, and Camp beat out a bunt to put runners on first and second with none out. Mezistrano's groundout moved the runners to second and third, and Riley's single to left drove in Orvella to chop the lead to 3-2.
The Wolfpack defense let in a run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Buffone singled to right and Gemmill walked. Buffone went to third on Maxwell's fly ball to right, and scored on a Wolfpack error. Sterry got out of the inning when Marc Maynor made an over-the-shoulder catch at the wall on Jarosinski's line drive.
Maynor led off the bottom of the fifth with a bunt that Maryland starter Chris Kane couldn't come up with for an error. Maynor stole second and went to third on Orvella's single to left. Camp hit a potential double-play grounder to second base, but Joe Sargent's throw to shortstop Kyle George was wide and sailed into left field for an error. Orvella scored on the play to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Maryland defense imploded in the bottom of the sixth. Dustin Knight led off and was safe on an error by Cosantino at third base. Jeremy Dutton singled to right and Maynor walked to load the bases. Matt Basinger relieved Kane and got Orvella to ground to shortstop, but George booted the ball for another error. That scored pinch-runner Matt Long with the tying run from third, and Camp followed with a squeeze bunt to drive in Dutton with the go-ahead run, making it 5-4 in favor of the Wolfpack. Mezistrano's sacrifice fly drove in Maynor, and Riley's grounder to third was kicked by Cosantino for another error, allowing Orvella to score from second and giving the Wolfpack a 7-4 lead.
The Terps scored two in the top of the eighth to slice the lead to one. Frazier singled to left, and after Maxey flied out, Jarosinski singled up the middle. That brought Devine out of the Wolfpack bullpen, and George and Sargent greeted him with sharply hit singles to left, driving in a a run and leaving the bases loaded for Cosantino, who cut the lead to a run at 7-6 with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Terps started the game-winning rally with one down in the top of the ninth. Frazier singled to left and Devine hit Maxey with a pitch. Daryl Whitmer pinch-ran for Frazier and came around to score on Jarosinski's double to right field. Pinch-runner Matt Maropis went to third on the play, and scored the game-winning run on George's grounder to shortstop.
The Wolfpack and Terrapins will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WKNC, 88.1 FM, and the broadcast will be available line on the internet at gopack.com.
