NC State Baseball’s Season Comes to an End Following 17-13 Loss to Auburn
5/30/2026 10:38:00 PM | Baseball
Auburn scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back, but the Pack would not go down without a fight, cutting into a 10-0 deficit with seven unanswered runs to make it 10-7. After trailing 17-7, NC State scored six to get it back to a four-run game, but couldn't complete the comeback.
The Tigers sent 13 men to the plate in the first inning, hitting two home runs off NC State starter Cooper Consiglio, who managed only one out before Heath Andrews came into the game in relief. Andrews gave the Wolfpack some length, going 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
Much of the Auburn scoring came from the long ball, as the Tigers hit five home runs. Ryder Garino and Luke Hemric came out of the Wolfpack bullpen and held the Tigers scoreless across the first three innings, giving the Wolfpack a chance.
Dalton Bargo and Luke Nixon each had three hits on the day, with Bargo driving in four with a home run and a double and scoring twice. Nixon finished the season on a 15-game hitting streak. Sherman Johnson scored three times, and freshman Vincent DeCarlo hit his first collegiate home run after coming on as a pinch hitter.
The Wolfpack took advantage of two Auburn errors and used a Bargo home run to score five runs in the third, making it a three-run deficit, but Auburn extended the lead to five in the top of the fourth after a home run of its own.
NC State started chipping away again in the sixth after Auburn added five runs, with RBI singles from Nixon and Chris McHugh. In the bottom of the seventh, Bargo drove in a run with a double and scored on a wild pitch, while freshman Christian Serrano and DeCarlo, in their first taste of regional action, contributed, with Serrano driving in a run on a sacrifice fly and DeCarlo's home run.
NC State looked to have one more rally in them in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not to be as the game ended on a pitch clock violation. This is the second consecutive year Auburn has eliminated NC State in the NCAA Tournament.
2026 saw the Wolfpack among the top offensive teams in the country, finishing with a top-25 team batting average. With 100 stolen bases, it marks the second most by a team in program history. Ty Head finished the season with 57 walks, the second most in a season in program history. Freshman Rett Johnson finished the season reaching base in 30 straight games and had a 28-game hitting streak, which ended in game one of the Auburn regional.
Head coach Elliott Avent's 30-year career at the helm of the Wolfpack comes to an end as he passes the reins to Associate Head Coach Chris Hart. Avent finishes his career with 1,327 wins and 1,103 wins at NC State. He leaves the Wolfpack as the winningest coach in program history and with the 21st-most wins in D1 history.
