NC State Baseball Stampedes Herd, 18-10, Sweeps Doubleheader

CLAYTON, N.C. - Brandon Shipwash made a triumphant return to his high school stomping grounds Saturday night, pitching NC State to an 18-10 victory over Marshall in the second game of a doubleheader at Clayton High School.
The Wolfpack, which won its sixth game in a row, improved to 11-4 with the win, while Marshall dropped to 3-7. Shipwash (1-0), who graduated from Clayton High in 2001, worked six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He walked four and struck out five. Marshall starter Rick Suter (0-2) allowed eight runs on seven hits in two-plus innings. He walked four and struck out one.
NC State put a six pack on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Conor Clougherty led off with a single to left, and Marc Maynor bunted him to second base. Chad Orvella walked, and Adam Hargrave rolled a single through the right side of the infield on a hit-and-run play, scoring Clougherty and sending Orvella to third. Hargrave stole second, and Jeremy Dutton singled to center to drive in both runners and make it 3-0. Joe Gaetti bunted for a single, and Colt Morton delivered a towering, majestic three-run home run to left, his sixth of the year, to give the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead.
Clougherty led off the bottom of the third with a double to left-center and scored on a triple to right-center by Maynor. That spelled the end of the evening for Suter. Fritz Conrad came out of the bullpen for the Herd and served up a single to right by Orvella to score Maynor and increase the lead to 8-0. Hargrave bunted Orvella to second, and Dutton doubled to right-center to score him and make it 9-0, Wolfpack.
Matt Long led off the bottom of the fourth and was hit by a pitch. Dustin Knight walked, and Long went to third on Clougherty's fly ball to left field. Maynor got the run home with a sacrifice fly, giving NC State a 10-0 lead.
Dutton and Gaetti led off the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back solo homers, upping the lead to 12-0.
Craig Dziedziejko led off the top of the sixth with a solo homer for the Herd and with two out, Francois Larmore walked. Gregg Hiller singled Larmore to second, and Roddy Steiger drove him in with a single to make it 12-2.
NC State got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning on Orvella's two-run homer, his first of the season. Marshall cut the lead to 14-3 in the top of the seventh when Josh McConnell reached on an error, went to second and third on wild pitches and scored on pinch-hitter Adam Frederick's single to right.
The Wolfpack struck for four unearned runs against reliever David Goodson in the bottom of the seventh to make it 18-3. The Pack mounted this rally on one hit, two walks, two hit batters and five wild pitches. Dustin Knight drove in a pair on a hit-and-run single and Orvella got a run in with a groundout.
Marshall got three in the top of the eighth on a solo homer by Larmore and a two-run shot by Bryan Helmer, and then added four more in the top of the ninth on a three-run shot by Larmore and an RBI double by Frederick.
