WILSON, N.C. - Phil Davidson pitched eight outstanding innings, and Jeremy Dutton and Joe Gaetti homered Sunday at Fleming Stadium to lead NC State to a 9-1 victory over Marshall. The Wolfpack, which won its seventh consecutive game, swept the three-game series from the Thundering Herd to improve to 12-4 on the season. Marshall dropped to 3-8 with the loss.
Davidson (1-1) allowed just one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out nine. Marshall starter Chris Koutsavlis (1-1) got tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on 11 hits in five innings. He struck out four and did not issue a walk.
It took one time through the lineup for the Wolfpack to figure out Koutsavlis, but Dutton led off the bottom of the third and blasted a long home run to right field to break up a scoreless tie. Gaetti was up next and singled, stole second and stole third, and then scored when catcher Rich Russell's throw went into left field for an error. Colt Morton and Tim Coffield followed with back-to-back doubles down the left-field line to make it 3-0, and with two out, Chad Orvella doubled to center field to make it 4-0, Wolfpack.
With two down in the bottom of the fourth, Gaetti homered to right, his seventh of the season, and Morton hit his second double of the game, a liner up the gap in right-center. Coffield drove in Morton with a seeing-eye single up the middle, increasing the NC State lead to 6-0.
Davidson cruised through the first four innings, but ran into trouble briefly in the fifth. Francois Larmore and Corie O'Bryan led off with singles up the middle, and Matt LaFleur drove in Larmore with a one-out RBI single to center. Davidson struck out Adam Frederick and got Josh McConnell on a come-backer to the mound to end the threat with the Wolfpack holding a 6-1 lead. Marshall did not threaten again.
The Pack added two more in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Camp singled to left and stole second. After Conor Clougherty grounded out, David Hicks was walked intentionally, and Orvella was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Maynor's double down the left-field line drove in Camp and Hicks to make it 8-1.
Gaetti led off the bottom of the eighth with his third hit of the game, a single to left, and went to second on a wild pitch. Morton's double to right-center drove Gaetti in to give the Pack a 9-1 lead heading into the ninth inning.
Notes: Gaetti's homer in the fourth was his seventh, a new personal career high for homers in a season. He hit six as a freshman in 2001, and five as a sophomore a year ago ... Jeremy Dutton got his 200th career hit in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday night ... Morton's three-run homer in that same game gave him 100 RBIs for his career.
