Pack Cruises to Fifth Straight Win

RALEIGH, N.C. – Behind Mikey Ryan's two home runs, Ryan Marohn and Anderson Nance's combined 17 strikeouts, the Wolfpack cruised to its fifth straight win with a 10-4 victory over Duke in the series opener Friday night at Doak Field.
Ryan, who now has eight home runs for the Wolfpack (23-11, 7-6), had his first career multi-homer day, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Sherman Johnson continued to swing a hot bat, hitting his third home run in two games and driving in three RBIs. Eight of the nine starters got a hit for the Wolfpack, and the team struck out only three times.
Marohn (6-1) did enough to earn the win, going 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on just three hits, with four walks and nine strikeouts. Nance followed and kept the Blue Devils from mounting a comeback, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts.
Despite Duke getting on the scoreboard first after a steal of home in the first inning, NC State put up a four-run second inning and did not trail the rest of the way. The Pack is now 11-9 on the season when trailing first.
Ryan got the scoring started with a three-run shot in the second to give the Pack the lead, and Luke Nixon hit his team-leading ninth double of the year to score Rett Johnson, who singled and stole second to put himself in scoring position.
Johnson now has a career-high eight-game hitting streak.
The Wolfpack added three in the third inning following Sherman Johnson's fourth home run of the season. Ty Head led off the inning with his 31st walk of the season, then stole his 20th base, both of which lead the team.
Brayden Fraasman tripled, and Drew Lanphere laid down a perfect squeeze bunt for an RBI to make it 7-1 for the Wolfpack.
Despite the Blue Devils scoring three runs across the fifth and sixth innings, NC State added three runs of its own following Ryan's second long ball of the game and Sherman Johnson manufacturing runs from a fielder's choice and a Duke error.
Duke had the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning, but Nance didn't flinch, getting out of the jam by striking out the side and holding Duke scoreless. NC State is 23-1 this season when leading after the eighth inning.
NC State and Duke will continue the three-game series tomorrow at 3 p.m. from the Doak as the Pack joins forces with Trea Turner and The V Foundation to fight pediatric cancer in the third annual Victory Over Cancer game.
