NC State Run-Rules Duke in Series Clinching Win

NC State (24-11, 8-6) used 15 hits, including three home runs, on its way to the Pack's largest win over the Blue Devils since 2005, when the Wolfpack defeated Duke 22-0. Saturday marked the eighth run-rule victory for the Pack of the season.
The Wolfpack has now won 20 games at the Doak this season. NC State has won 20 or more games at The Doak 26 times since Avent's first year as head coach.
Leadoff man Rett Johnson went 4-for-4 today with two RBIs and four runs scored. Luke Nixon followed Johnson in the lineup with a 3-for-4 afternoon, including two doubles, three runs scored, and two RBIs.
Brayden Fraasman, Drew Lanphere, and Andrew Wiggins each hit home runs in the contest, while Mikey Ryan continues to produce after a two-hit, two-run, two-RBI day.
During the seven-game losing streak, the Pack offense scored just 22 runs, batted 45-for-217 (.207), with 7 XBH and 33-54 BB-K. During the current six-game winning streak: 56 runs, 71-for-202 (.351), 27 XBH, 30-39 BB-K.
Heath Andrews (3-1) gave up four runs in the first two innings but settled in, retiring 14 straight batters before exiting. He finished with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing four earned runs on five hits, with two walks and six strikeouts. Sam Harris would come in and get the final out, throwing four total pitches, three of which were strikes.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but that would be the only time the visitors would lead as the Pack scored six in the bottom of the first on four hits. With the bases loaded, Ty Head walked for the 33rd time this season to tie the game, and Ryan followed with a two-run double.
Dalton Bargo brought in a run following a ground ball, and Fraasman capped off the frame with his second home run of the season.
With three runs in the top of the second, Duke closed the gap, but NC State responded again, capitalizing on runners on base after a Duke error to score two and make it 8-4.
After the third, Duke did not have a runner reach base until two outs in the seventh inning. The Wolfpack, however, scored three more times, all with two outs, beginning with a Lanphere solo home run. Nixon doubled, allowing Johnson to score, and Chris McHigh's 48th hit of the season scored Nixon. McHugh's 47 RBIs lead the team, and he has now reached base in 17 straight games.
The fourth inning was the only one in which the Pack didn't score. In the fifth, Fraasman, Johnson, and Nixon combined to bring in two more runs.
Five runs came across to score for the Pack, putting the game out of reach, capped off by Wiggins' fifth home run of the season after coming on as a pinch hitter. Wiggins is hitting .333 as a pinch hitter, including three home runs, eight RBIs, and eight runs scored.
NC State will seek its second consecutive ACC sweep as the series with the Blue Devils wraps up tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Doak, with Cooper Consiglio starting on the mound for the Wolfpack.
