RALEIGH, N.C. – After scoring 28 runs in the first two games of the series, NC State managed just two runs on five hits in the series finale against Duke, falling 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Doak Field.
Despite the low scoring, NC State's pitching held the Blue Devils to two runs on three hits through three innings, with the game tied heading into the ninth. Unfortunately for the Pack, Duke's fourth hit was a solo home run, giving the visitors the lead.
NC State (24-12, 8-7) looked to have one more rally in the game, with the tying run at third and the winning run at second with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Duke escaped the jam and salvaged the final game of the series.
The Wolfpack's two runs came off the bat of Chris McHugh, who had two RBI doubles, each scoring Rett Johnson, who had a hit and two walks in the game. Mikey Ryan had a two-hit game to cap off his big week at the plate.
Cooper Consiglio pitched spectacularly, allowing just one earned run on three hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts. At one point, Consiglio retired 12 of the last 13 Duke batters he faced, including 10 straight to finish the outing, in his first start in two weeks.
Ryder Garino (2-2) took the loss after giving up the home run in the ninth. That would be the only run he allowed in 2.1 innings of work, finishing with a walk and two strikeouts. Collins Black came in and got the final two outs in the ninth with two strikeouts.
Duke got on the board first with a run in the first and the second. NC State would not score until the sixth inning, as McHugh extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI double, as he has reached safely in 18 straight games.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, McHugh tied the game on the first pitch of the at-bat after Johnson had walked and stolen second base. The Pack threatened to take the lead as Ty Head reached first after a walk, but the Blue Devils got out of the inning.
The Wolfpack was 1-7 with runners in scoring position and 2-17 with runners on base.
NC State will now begin a seven-game road trip, with four of those games played in the state of North Carolina, beginning on Tuesday, April 14th, in Greenville, as the Pack takes on East Carolina at 6 p.m.
