RALEIGH, N.C. β The first extra-inning game of the season for the Wolfpack saw No. 13 NC State fall in 10 innings 4-3 to Stanford Friday night from the Doak.
Β
Despite the loss, the Wolfpack secured a double bye in next week's ACC tournament, as the final seeding will be released tomorrow night following the regular series finale.
Β
NC State (33-17,17-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Stanford (26-24, 10-19) responded with a two-run home run in the sixth to tie the game. In the bottom of the sixth, NC State manufactured a run to take the lead, but in the eighth, Stanford once again tied things up.
Β
The first lead of the game for the visitors came in the 10th, with the Wolfpack unable to respond, allowing Stanford to even the series. It was the first loss of the season for NC State, with the game tied after the eighth inning.
Β
Dominic Fritton made his 14th start of the season and went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Andrew Shaffner and Jacob Dudan (2-2) followed Fritton and combined for 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs.
Β
The three Wolfpack runs came from the bottom three of the order as Matt Ossenfort, Matt Heavner, and Brandon Novy each had an RBI.
Β
Ossenfort got the scoring started with a two-out double, scoring Ty Head, who walked for the 48th time this season. Head is now tied with Danny Canela in program history for most walks in a season.
Β
Back-to-back doubles from Novy and Heavner in the fifth plated another run. NC State looked to have a big inning as the Wolfpack loaded the bases with only one out, but a strikeout and fly ball to the wall ended the threat.
Β
After the Cardinal tied the game in the top of the sixth, NC State took the lead in the bottom of the sixth again as Brayden Fraasman led off with a double, and a deep fly out from Head was enough to move him to third. Novy beat out a ground ball for a fielder's choice and scored another run. Β
Β
For Stanford, Jimmy Nati was 2-4 with a double and his second home run of the series. He finished with RBIs as his home run in the sixth tied the game at two. A sacrifice fly from Temo Becerra tied the game in the eighth.
Β
The Cardinal led off the 10th with a single, and a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. A double followed, scoring the go-ahead run. NC State would go down in order in the bottom of the 10th.
Β
UP NEXT: The regular season and series finale is set for tomorrow, Saturday, May 17th, at 1 p.m. It is senior day, and NC State will honor four seniors: Matt Willadsen, Carson Kelly, Justin DeCriscio, and Jacob Dienes.
