RALEIGH, N.C. – The 2025 regular season concludes this weekend as No. 13 NC State welcomes Stanford for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, May 15th at 6 p.m. from the Doak. Friday's game will also be at 6 p.m., with the series wrapping up on Saturday, May 17th at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ACCNX and heard on WKNC 88.1 FM and the Varsity Network app.
Saturday is senior day as the Wolfpack will celebrate four seniors for their time and dedication to the NC State baseball program: Justin DeCriscio, Jacob Dienes, Carson Kelly, and Matt Willadsen. They will all be recognized for their contributions before Saturday's game.
This will be just the fourth-ever meeting between NC State and Stanford. The last time these two programs met was in the 2021 College World Series, seeing the Wolfpack win 10-4. The two previous meetings, before 2021, took place in 2006 in Austin, Texas, during the postseason of the Austin Regional; Stanford won both contests.
There will be a lot to play for this weekend as NC State looks to win their first ACC regular season title since 1986. A sweep of the Cardinal and one loss by Florida State would secure the title and the first seed in the ACC tournament next week.
For the first time since the preseason, NC State is ranked in all five collegiate baseball polls.
D1 Baseball- 13th, USA Today Coaches Poll- 18th, Baseball America and NCBWA – 21st, Perfect Game 24th. The Wolfpack went seven weeks in the middle of the season unranked before entering the rankings again in week 10.
Since 2021, The Wolfpack has consistently maintained a strong Rating Percentage Index (RPI), reflecting its competitive performance. NC State is among the top programs nationally, with an average RPI ranking within the top 10 during this period. Entering the week, NC State has an RPI of 25 currently.
PROJECTED STARTING PITCHERS:
Thursday: LHP Ryan Marohn (NCSU) vs. RHP Joey Volchko (STAN)
Friday: LHP Dominic Fritton (NCSU) vs. RHP Nick Dugan (STAN)
Saturday: TBA (NCSU) vs. TBA (STAN)
Dominic Fritton is nine strikeouts away from reaching 100 in a season. It would be the most strikeouts in a season since Carlos Rodon had 117 in 2014. In 2008, Clayton Shunick struck out 114 batters for 10th all-time. Rodon holds the record for 183 strikeouts in a single season.
Fritton enters the final weekend leading the ACC in innings pitched with 72.2. Ryan Marohon is right behind him in second with 72.2 and seventh in strikeouts with 77. NC State is the only school in the conference with two pitchers in the top 10 in both innings pitched and batters struck out.
NC State pitching as a whole has been strong this season. The Wolfpack ranks 18th in the nation and second in the ACC in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 2.72 per game, averaging 10.0 strikeouts per game.
Freshman Anderson Nance has eight wins this season, making him one of five freshmen in the country with eight wins. It is the most by a Wolfpack freshman since Sam Highfill won nine games in 2021. Highfill shares the record with Carlos Rodon, who went 9-0 in 2012 during his freshman campaign.
In his first year with the program after transferring from VCU, first baseman Chris McHugh has been one of the most productive hitters in the ACC. He is third in batting average (.377) and eighth in OBP (.474). McHugh leads NC State with 22 multi-hit games and has 12 games with multiple RBIs, including a five-RBI game.
