RALEIGH, N.C. – In the regular season finale, No. 13 NC State fell to Stanford 6-3 Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinal used a four-run fifth inning to come back and beat the Wolfpack and take two of three in the series.
NC State (33-18, 17-11) held a 3-2 lead going into the fifth inning, but the Cardinal used five hits to score four runs, including a bases-loaded single with two outs to take the lead, which they would not give up.
Cooper Consiglio (1-4) pitched a scoreless fourth inning but gave up four runs in the fifth to get tagged with the loss. Heath Andrews started for the Wolfpack and lasted 2.2 innings, allowing just one earned run with two strikeouts and no walks.
Shane Van Dam came on and settled things down, retiring all nine batters he faced on 40 pitches. Senior Carson Kelly worked a perfect ninth inning to keep the deficit to just three.
Offensively for NC State, senior Justin DeCrisio was 3-3 at the dish with two RBIs. Alex Sosa had the third RBI of the game. Brandon Novy had two of the nine Wolfpack hits. Despite walking four times and only striking out three, the Wolfpack was just 1-12 with runners in scoring position on the day.
Stanford (27-24, 11-19) used eight pitchers for the second time this series, with only one seeing more than an inning of work. Getting the win was Kassius Thomas (1-1), and Ty Uber earned his third save of the season.
A failed pickoff attempt in the first inning got Stanford on the board first. NC State immediately responded with a Luke Nixon leadoff double, followed by a sacrifice fly from DeCriscio, to tie the game at 1-1.
After Stanford retook the lead in the third, it was DeCrsicio again tying the game with a single. Sosa gave NC State its first lead of the day with a sacrifice fly of his own.
After the visitors took the lead in the fifth, the Wolfpack had their chances, getting the leadoff man on in both the sixth and the seventh inning. NC State loaded the bases in the sixth but was unable to plate any runs.
NC State finishes the season 22-9 at home and has secured a double bye in next week's ACC Tournament with their first game on Thursday, May 22, and will find out its seeding and opponent later tonight.
