DURHAM, N.C. – In a game that saw 13 runs on 28 hits, NC State just fell short in a back-and-forth affair in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, losing 7-6 to Clemson Thursday night from the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The fourth meeting of the season between the two teams saw four lead changes, with the big blow coming from Clemson in the top of the eighth inning. The Tigers plated three runs after trailing 5-4 to take a 7-5 lead.
NC State (33-19) got back within one in the bottom of the eighth and nearly tied the game in the ninth with a deep fly ball to the warning track from Luke Nixon, but the Tigers went on to hold on to the one-run victory.
Justin DeCriscio had a big night at the plate, going three for three, two RBIs, and a run scored. Freshman Ty Head had three hits in the game, with Alex Sosa, Matt Heavner, and Brayden Fraasman all adding an RBI. The Wolfpack had one extra-base hit all night, a Josh Hogue double, and three of the four walks came from Matt Ossenfort.
After missing the final three games of the regular season, first baseman Chris McHugh returned to the lineup and finished with two hits and two runs scored.
Dominic Fritton started the Wolfpack and went a solid five innings, allowing just three runs with no walks and six strikeouts. Fritton's fourth strikeout of the night gave him 100 for the season as he became the first Wolfpack to reach the century mark since Carlos Rodon in 2014.
Anderson Nance (8-2) came on in relief for Fritton and ended up with only his second loss of the season. Nance allowed four runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Jacob Dudan followed and went 1.2 innings of work without giving up a run and keeping the Pack close.
Only two of Clemson's 16 hits were for extra bases. Cam Cannarella had a four-hit night, while Jacob Jarrell had three RBIs on two hits and scored twice. The Tigers were 5-11 with runners in scoring position, and despite NC State getting the leadoff man on base in six of the nine innings, the key difference was the Tiger defense turned four double plays, the most the Wolfpack had hit into all season.
Lucas Mahlstedt (3-0) got the win for the Tigers after going four innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Drew Titsworth started for Clemson and lasted five innings, giving up three runs on five hits while walking three with three punch outs.
The Wolfpack took the lead in both the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, NC State strung together three straight hits with nobody out to push across a run to tie the game. With runners on first and second, Clemson turned a double play. The Pack would lead on a wild pitch with a runner coming home from third.
In the sixth, NC State saw four straight hits to take another one-run advantage, but once again, a double play slowed the momentum, and the Wolfpack was never able to increase their lead to more than one run at any point of the game.
NC State will now wait to hear its name called on Selection Monday, beginning at noon, as it awaits its destination for the NCAA Tournament.
