
Wolfpack Drops Series Opener at Duke

DURHAM, NC – In the first of three with the Duke Blue Devils, NC State baseball fell 5-1 Friday night from Jack Coombs Field, dropping their third straight game.
NC State (17-9, 4-3) registered a season-low four hits against the Blue Devils while leaving nine on base. NC State was 0-15, with runners on with Duke 4-12 in the same category. The Wolfpack didn't have a runner reach third base on the night until the ninth inning.
The Wolfpack avoided the shutout in the top of the ninth inning as pinch hitters Trenton Lyons and Drew Lanphere combined for the first and only run of the game. Lyons was hit by the pitch, then stole second, putting him in scoring position. Lanphere singled him in for his seventh RBI of the year and has reached base in 12 straight games.
Dominic Frinton (4-2) lost his first game in five games after 5.2 innings of work. He allowed four runs on seven hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
Duke starter Owen Proksch (1-0) got his first win of the season. He went five innings only, allowing just two hits, three walks, and six strikeouts.
Duke got on the board in the first with a two-out solo home run in the bottom half of the first inning. Ben Miller took a close pitch in a 1-2 count that could have been called a strike but was a ball leading to the home run on the first pitch.
Miller added his second solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-0 before the home team added two more in the bottom of the fifth making it a 4-0 advantage. A fifth run came in the seventh.
Nine-hole hitter Ty Head had two of the four hits for NC State. NC State didn't record an extra-base hit on the night.
Game two of the series will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 29, and broadcast on ACCNX.
