PITTSBURGH, Pa. – NC State baseball secured their second ACC series on Saturday with a 6-4 victory over Pittsburgh to win their third straight game and 19th consecutive win over the Panthers.
NC State (17-6, 4-1) capitalized off four Pitt errors to score four runs, and strong pitching stifled the Panther's comeback attempts, holding Pitt to 0-3 with the bases loaded in the game.
Luke Nixon's bat stays hot, with a two-RBI day with one hit and scoring once. NC State totaled nine hits compared to the Panther's 13, making it the second win of the season when the opponents outhit the Wolfpack.
Freshman Anderson Nance (3-1) earned the victory out of the bullpen after tossing zeros across 2.2 innings, allowing just three strikeouts and four strikeouts with a walk. Heath Andrews started for NC State and went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
After throwing 26 pitches in the Wolfpack's game-one victory, Andrew Shaffner picked up his second save of the season in game two. Shaffner came on in the ninth to get the final out of the game and did so with a three-pitch strikeout.
Pitt Starter Ryan Reed got the loss after tossing six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits; only two of the five runs were earned.
NC Started the scoring in the third with Matt Heavner walking to start the inning, and a Ty Head double put runners in scoring position. Heavner came around to score after a Justin DeCriscio groundout, and a sacrifice fly from Josh Hogue scored Head to make it 2-0.
A Pitt error put Nixon on to start the fourth. With a steal of a second and a groundout, Nixon was on third. Drew Lanphere singled him home, and it was 3-0 in the fourth. The Panthers responded in the bottom half with two runs after two walks scored from a double.
The one-run lead was pushed back to three in the fifth as two runs were scored on two hits and a Panther error. Brayden Fraasman singled up the middle to cap off the scoring.
But once again, the Panthers responded with two runs to make it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth with four hits.
Two errors in the seventh from the home team brought in the Pack's sixth run. Nance ran into some trouble in the eighth after getting two quick puts. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Panthers. In a 3-2 count, Nance got the Pitt batter ground out to third to get out of the jam.
UP Next: The Wolfpack will try to sweep the series tomorrow, Sunday, March 23, at 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
