PITTSBURGH, Pa. – NC State Baseball fell in the series finale against Pitt 5-3 on Sunday afternoon in eight innings due to a predetermined 4 P.M. drop-dead time on a travel day.
In a 3-3 game in the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff double and a single gave Pitt the deciding lead. Andrew Shaffner, who recorded a win and a save in the first two games of the series, picks up his first loss of the season after being unable to record an out.
After a clean first two games in the series, the Wolfpack made two errors, with the second proving costly as Pitt added an unearned run for their fifth run of the game from a single off Jacob Dudan, who came on for Shaffner.
The eighth inning began before 4 p.m., allowing the inning to be played out, but the Pack went down in order, and the game was called, giving Pitt the victory without playing the ninth.
NC State (17-7,4-2) totaled four hits on the day. In the nine spot, Matt Heavner had a hit, RBI, and run scored. Luke Nixon doubled, giving him a hit in his fourth straight game. Brayden Fraasman and Ty Head also added a hit each.
Five batters were left on base between the two teams in the first inning. The Wolfpack stranded runners on second and third, and the Panthers left the bases loaded for the fourth time in the series. NC State starter Ryan Marohn got out of the jam with two strikeouts and a foul out.
NC State made sure not to leave runners on base in the second, scoring three times with some timely execution. A squeeze play from Heavner and a perfect slide from Gilliam where he avoided the tag scored the game's first run. NC State added two more in the frame from a wild pitch and an error to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom half.
Pitt responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning following a double and a single, then a wild pitch to make a one-run game.
Marohn kept the Panthers scoreless until the fifth inning, when the hosts evened the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly. Marohn ended the damage there as he picked off the runner at first to end the inning.
For the sixth time in the series, the Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Marohn got the first two outs, the Wolfpack moved to the bullpen and brought on Carson Kelly to get the final out. In a 2-2 count, Kelly got a fly ball that carried to the warning track but was easily brought in by Gilliam.
Marohn went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Marohn did walk five in the game after coming into Sunday with just four on the season.
UP NEXT: NC State returns home to Doak field for a midweek matchup with USC-Upstate on Tuesday, March 25th, at 6 p.m. Following the game with the Spartans, the Wolfpack will make the short trip down the road to Durham for a weekend series with Duke beginning on Friday, March 28th, at 8 p.m. Friday's game with the Blue Devils will be on ACC Network.
