
NC State Gets Set to Play Richmond on Tuesday

RALEIGH, NC – After a trip to Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Classic, NC State baseball returns home to take on the Richmond Spiders at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from The Doak and broadcast on ACCNX.
The Wolfpack will look to end a four-game losing streak on Tuesday afternoon. After sweeping the opening series over Fordham, the Pack has fallen to Liberty, Ohio State, Alabama, and Coastal Carolina. This is the Wolfpack's first four-game losing streak since 2023. After that losing streak, the Wolfpack rattled off five straight wins.

RHP Andrew Shaffner (NCSU) vs. RHP Jackson Hinchliffe (RICH)
Tuesday will mark the 40th meeting in the series between NC State and Richmond. The Wolfpack enter the midweek matchup with a 30-9 record. This will be the first meeting with the Spiders since 2014, when Richmond was victorious 7-4. Richmond was the Wolfpack's first opponent. In their inaugural season in 1940 under head coach Doc Newton, the Wolfpack lost 5-0.
Sophomore Andrew Shaffner is set to make his first career start on Tuesday. Shaffner has appeared in three games this season out of the bullpen. He has four strikeouts, a walk, and a 3.00 ERA in six innings pitched while holding opposing hitters to a .261 batting average.
Opening Weekend Shaffner came on in relief in game one, pitched 3.2 innings, and only allowed three hits and no runs to earn his first collegiate win.
Luke Nixon and Ty Head have reached base safely in all seven games this season. Nixon is hitting .296 this year and has eight hits, including a team-high three doubles with six RBIs. Head has a batting average of .286; in 21 at-bats, he has six hits and a team-high eight walks.
Newcomer Brayden Fraasman is one of 29 players in college baseball yet to strike out this season. Fraasman is hitting .286 and has started in all seven Wolfpack games. In a team-high 28 at-bats, Fraasman has eight hits, including two doubles and a triple, with two home runs and eight RBIs.
The Wolfpack has faced right-handed starting pitchers in all seven games this season; Hinchliffe for Richmond will be the eighth. NC State batters are 49 for 180 (.272) against righties this season and 12 for 46 (.261) against lefties.
NC State opponents are hitting Wolfpack right-handers at a .193 clip or 26 for 135. Opponents have seen more success against lefties as they are hitting .342 on the season (26 for 76)
