Raleigh, NC - With the ball game tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Richmond used two home runs and scored four to take the lead and go on to be victorious, seeing the Spiders beat NC State 5-1 on Tuesday from Doak Field.
Â
After NC State (3-5) took a 1-0 lead in the very first inning and connected for four hits off Richmond starter Jackson Hinchliffe, the Spiders' bullpen shut down the Wolfpack offense, holding NC State to one base runner, retiring 22 of 23 Wolfpack hitters beginning in the second inning. The lone Wolfpack base runner came via a Brayden Fraasman walk in the bottom of the ninth inning.Â
Â
Before the four-run seventh, a pitchers duel broke out as Andrew Shaffner made his fourth appearance of the season and first collegiate start. Shaffner went three innings, allowing just one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Â
Â
Despite throwing 3.2 solid innings, freshman Anderson Nance (0-1) picked up the loss. After getting the first two outs of the inning on three pitches, Richmond used a double and then a hit batter to extend the inning, which led to a Jordan Jaffe home run to put Richmond up for good.
Â
The Spiders would hit back-to-back home runs, adding the fourth run of the inning after Copper Consiglio came on for Nance.
Â
Brian Reinke (1-0) earned the win for Richmond (7-1) after throwing 4.1 innings, striking out four and putting zeros across the board.
Â
The Wolfpack's four hits came in the first two innings from Luke Nixon, Fraasman, Chris McHugh, and Ty Head.
Â
McHugh accounted for the only run batted in the ball game after singling with the bases loaded in the first. NC State had the opportunity to add more with one out in the inning, but a double play ended the threat.
 Â
Nixon got the Wolfpack rolling with a double to right-center, setting the stage for Fraasman, who followed with a single to move Nixon to third. A hit-by-pitch for Sosa loaded the bases, bringing Mchugh to the plate.
Â
It was McHugh's 10th RBI of the season, which leads the NC State offense.Â
Â
Richmond responded in the third inning, using three singles to score their first run of the game. With runners at the corners and two outs, the damage was limited as Shaffner got out of the jam.
Â
Carson Kelly, Tristan Potts, and Camden Wimbish came on out of the bullpen and kept the game close. Between the three of them, they held Richmond to just two hits.
Â
This is the first time the Wolfpack has had a five-game losing streak since March 2021.
