Raleigh, NC - Behind career days from Dominic Fritton, Ty Head, and Jaxon Lucas, the Wolfpack ended their five-game losing streak with a win over Canisius, defeating the Golden Griffins 10-2 on Friday from Doak Field.
The Wolfpack struck out a season-high 18 batters, the first time they have done so since 2013 against Florida Atlantic.
For NC State (4-5), Fritton (1-1) struck out seven of the first nine batters, which included six straight. Fritton set a new career high of strikeouts with 12 on the day, getting his first win of the season. It was the most strikeouts in a game by a Wolfpack pitcher since Matt Willadsen had 13 in 2022.
Lucas (1) earned his first collegiate save. He added six strikeouts, which was a career best, and only allowed one base runner across three innings.
Freshman Ty Head led the Wolfpack with five RBIs on two hits, including a grand slam for his first collegiate home run. Alex Sosa added his third home run of the season, and Justin DeCriscio had two hits and two RBIs in the leadoff spot.
Canisius (0-4) scored first in the first inning but would only muster one run the rest of the game from a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Peyton Consigli (0-2) gave up seven runs on seven hits; he walked four and struck out two in four innings.
NC State would take the lead in the second and not look back. A single and two walks loaded the bases, a fielder's choice and an out at home plate brought up Head. With two strikes, Head connected for a 394 foot grand slam for his first home run in a Wolfpack uniform.
Sosa padded the Wolfpack lead with a home run in the third, making it 5-1. It was the NC State catcher's third home run of the season, which leads the team.
Canisus did their best to put more runs on the board in the top of the fifth following the wild pitch as two walks and two singles with nobody out loaded the bases for the visitors. Fritton kept his composure and struck three straight batters to get out of the jam.
The last Wolfpack pitcher to strike out the side in a bases-loaded situation with nobody out was Fritton, who did so in 2023 against NC A&T.
The Wolfpack broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs to take a 10-2 lead. Three straight RBI hits from Matt Heavner, DeCriscio, and Luke Nixon did the job.
Lucas would come in to relieve Fritton in the top of the seventh and shut down the Golden Griffins.
UP NEXT: NC State and Canisius will continue their three-game set tomorrow, Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m., which will be broadcast on ACCNX.
