THE MATCHUP: SERIES AGAINST COASTAL CAROLINA
NC State is 20-14 all-time in the series against Coastal Carolina. More notes from the series against Coastal Carolina are listed below:
• NC State and Coastal Carolina first met on March 28, 1986, in Conway. The Wolfpack notched an 8-4 victory in the first meeting betwen the two programs.
• The Wolfpack won the first three meetings in the series before the Chanticleers notched a 4-2 home victory on Feb. 28, 1988.
• NC State has won the past two matchups in the series against Coastal Carolina, knocking off the Chanticleers 24-7 on March 4, 2020, and 16-4 this past season in Conway on Feb. 22.
• Parker Nolan was the star of NC State's 16-4 victory in Conway this past season, going 4-for-5 with two homers, a double, four runs scored and six RBI. Nolan capped off his incredible performance by clearing the tall centerfield wall at Coastal's Brooks Stadium.
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA
Coastal Carolina (17-3, 2-1 SBC) has won 16 of its past 17 games after opening the season 1-2 in its annual opening weekend Baseball at the Beach tournament. The Chanticleers are 1-1 this season against ACC opponents, falling 5-3 at home to then-No. 12 Duke before blowing out No. 7 Wake Forest 17-9 this past Tuesday in Conway. Five Chanticleer batters with 50 or more at-bats are batting .355 or better, highlighted by Blake Barthol's team-best .378 batting average. Barthol also paces Coastal Carolina with 12 homers, 32 RBI and 71 total bases. On the mound, the Chanticleers have posted a staff ERA of 4.55 as Coastal Carolina pitchers had limited opposing batters to a .238 batting average against them. The Chanticleers were predicted as the preseason favorites to win the Sun Belt this season.
DUGOUTS FULL OF DUBS
After facing off against active Division I wins leader Danny Hall over the weekend, NC State and skipper Elliott Avent will match up against yet another coach with over 1,000 wins in his career and 1,000 wins at his current school when Gary Gilmore's Chanticleers make the trip to Raleigh. Gilmore, who sits one win away from 1,100 at Coastal Carolina, holds a career record of 1,352-677-5. Between him and Avent, the pair of longtime head coaches have amassed 2,586 college coaching victories over a combined 71 years as college head coaches.
TIME TO BOUNCE BACK
For the first time since April 2-9 this past season, NC State has dropped four straight games following the series sweep at Georgia Tech. When the Pack last lost four straight in 2023, NC State responded with five straight victories, highlighted by a series sweep at home over Florida State. The Wolfpack also logged midweek victories over Davidson and UNCW during that five-game winning streak.
MIDWEEK MADNESS
To add to its difficult ACC slate, NC State faces five nonconference opponents predicted inside the top three of their respective leagues' preseason polls. Coastal Carolina (Sun Belt) and East Carolina (American) are both the preseason favorites to win their conference crowns. UNCW and Campbell are predicted second and third, respectively, in the CAA, while Ball State was predicted second in the MAC.
TRUE FRESHMAN SHINES IN WOLFPACK DEBUT
For the second straight season, a true freshman (first-year) pitcher started for the Wolfpack on Opening Weekend. Freshman left-hander Ryan Marohn exceled in his first collegiate start on Feb. 18, earning the victory after tossing five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Marohn escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth with a three-pitch strikeout, tipping his cap as he walked off the mound on his 89th and final pitch of the afternoon. Marohn allowed just two hits and three walks in the start. Fellow southpaw, sophomore Dominic Fritton, also made his NC State debut as a Sunday starter on Opening Weekend in 2023 against Wagner. Before Fritton, Matt Willadsen was the last true freshman starting pitcher to get the nod on Opening Weekend on Feb. 15, 2020.
First pitch at The Doak is set for 6 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra. A free audio stream will be available for Tuesday's contest on the Varsity Network App and will be available on the radio on WKNC 88.1.
