THE MATCHUP: SERIES AGAINST UNCG
NC State holds a 33-9 advantage in the series against UNCG. More notes from the series against the Spartans are listed below:
• NC State and UNCG first met on March 25, 1991, when the Wolfpack notched a 13-5 victory over the Spartans in Raleigh. The Spartans returned the favor in the series' second matchup, posting a 5-2 win a year later on March 3, 1992.
• The Wolfpack has won five straight over the Spartans dating back to a 3-0 shutout victory on March 30, 2021. The Pack has outscored UNCG 57-22 during its current winning streak in the series.
• NC State swept the season series over UNCG in 2023. The Pack capped off its 13-game winning streak to open the 2023 season with a 15-13 victory on a windy day in Greensboro on March 7. NC State then completed the season sweep with a 6-2 win at home at Doak Field.
SCOUTING UNCG
UNCG (8-7) opened its season 4-0 with a weekend sweep of Fairfield before knocking off then-No. 1 Wake Forest at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Feb. 20. The Spartans posted a 1-3 record this past week, recording a local 13-7 victory over High Point before dropping all three games at No. 10 Clemson over the weekend. GC Jarman leads UNCG with a .357 batting average, while Caleb Cozart leads the Spartans with six homers. The Spartans were predicted sixth in the 2024 SoCon Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll.
HOT START IN THE LEAGUE
Winning games in the ACC is hard. Very hard. The Wolfpack's three-game sweep over Boston College to open league play is its first since sweeping Pittsburgh to open ACC competition in 2019. Before 2019, the feat was also replicated with a three-game sweep over Notre Dame to open league play in 2014.
LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD
The Pack secured a series sweep over Boston College on Sunday at Doak Field...in exciting fashion. The Wolfpack and Eagles combined for 34 runs, 34 hits and 11 home runs in the 18-16 NC State victory. NC State's 34 combined runs in a game are its most since a 24-12 loss at Elon on March 5, 2013. Sunday's high-scoring battle also marked the most runs scored at Doak Field at Dail Park since NC State's record-setting 32-3 victory over La Salle on Feb. 19, 2010, to open the 2010 campaign. Six NC State batters recorded three-hit performances as the Pack smacked 10 extra-base hits -- four homers and six doubles. The Wolfpack finished with exactly 21 hits for the first time since March 4, 2020, against Coastal Carolina. Alec Makarewicz and Eli Serrano III each logged five RBI apiece, which is the first time a pair of Wolfpack batters logged five RBI or more each since April 18, 2023, against Davidson.
THE BATS ARE HOT
NC State's offense ranks in the top 20 of many national categories, including batting average (.343, 10th), runs scored per game (10.2, 16th), home runs per game (1.93, 18th), slugging percentage (.575, 18th) and on-base percentage (.446, 20th).
WINNING WAYS AT THE DOAK
NC State has won nine straight games dating back to its series-clinching victory at Hawaii on Feb. 25. When the Wolfpack returned to Raleigh, NC State logged a 5-0 week with a 17-2 win over Queens before sweeping Towson in a four-game set. The Pack then opened ACC play with a three-game sweep over Boston College. In total, NC State has outscored its competition 94-36 during its current nine-game homestand. The Wolfpack has reached double digits in runs scored in seven of its past 11 games played, including a season-high 18 runs to complete the ACC sweep over the Eagles.
A-MAK ATTACK
NC State baseball third baseman Alec Makarewicz has been on a tear since joining the Wolfpack for his final collegiate season, leading the Pack with 32 RBI, 52 total bases, a .839 slugging percentage and 14 extra-base hits. A-Mak earned ACC Player of the Week honors on March 4 after batting .455 with a team-high 10 hits, four doubles, 13 RBI, 20 total bases and six extra-base hits during the prior week. Entering Tuesday's game, he ranks first in the nation with 2.29 RBI per game and second nationally with 32 total RBI.
RECORD AGAINST IN-STATE OPPONENTS
NC State finished 9-8 against in-state opponents in 2023, completing season sweeps of UNCG and UNCW before splitting a pair of NCAA Tournament matchups against No. 12 Campbell in June. The Pack's only nonconference losses came to in-state opponents Elon (March 14) and No. 12 East Carolina (April 4). NC State also recorded a 22-7 win over Davidson on April 18, a 5-4 victory over No. 12 ECU on April 25, a 6-5 win over NC A&T on May and an 8-7 win over Duke at the ACC Tournament on May 23. Wednesday's matchup against Queens will be the Pack's first against an in-state team this season.
Since taking over the NC State baseball program in 1997, head coach Elliott Avent has led the Pack to a 355-179 (.665) record against in-state opponents. NC State's win over Queens marked its first win over an in-state opponent in 2024.
Tuesday's game will stream live on ACC Network Extra. A free audio stream will be available for Tuesday's contest on the Varsity Network App and will be available on the radio on WKNC 88.1.
