RALEIGH, N.C.- The Wolfpack put on a show this weekend to kick off its 2024-25 slate with a pair of ranked matchups against Arizona State. The Pack came out hot, breaking seven pool records, and one school record. No. 12 ranked Wolfpack women came out with a win defeating the Sun Devils (222-131). The Arizona State men's team got a lead over the Wolfpack with a (195-158) win.Â
ÂFreshman Leah Shackley and Erika Pelaez were not shy to break records this weekend, as they dominated their competition in all events. Erika Pelaez led the Wolfpack women with a school record, and pool record, and six first place finishes to add to her resume. Leah Shackley who joined Pelaez on the USA junior national team set a pair of pool records herself in the women's 200-yard butterfly, as well as the women's 400-yard medley relay. Shackley herself secured five first place finishes over the weekend.
ÂThe Wolfpack opened its season honoring Wolfpack alum and two time Olympic medalist Katharine Berkoff back to Raleigh where head coach Braden Holloway awarded her with her national champion ring during the ceremony. Head Coach Braden Holloway was also recognized during the meet for his contributions as an assistant coach for the Team USA women's Swimming team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The seven members of the Wolfpack men's American record holding teams were also recognized at Friday's meet. Swimmers Aiden Hayes, Sam Hoover, Luke Miller, Quintin McCarty, Jerry Fox, Noah Henderson, and Drew Salls all shared the spotlight as they were recognized for their outstanding performances in the 200 medley relay, and the 200 freestyle relay.
ÂIndividual Highlights
Freshman Erika Pelaez made her college debut breaking the school record in the women's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.14. Erika now claims the fastest 200-yard freestyle time in female college swimming. This was Erika's first individual event as a new member of the Wolfpack. Penciling her name at the top of the record books, Erika also clinched the new pool record in the women's 200-yard backstroke (1:50.71). Pelaez also led the pack giving her team a first place finish in the women's 100-yard freestyle and also recording the third fastest time in college.Â
ÂSophomore, Chase Mueller recorded a personal best and a first place finish in the men's 500-yard freestyle Friday evening with a time of 4:15.31. Mueller moved his way on up to the top-3 in 2024 NCAA records.Â
ÂQuintin McCarty came out with some real speed in the men's 50-yard freestyle, setting a pool record with a time of 18.91 breaking his own previous record of 19.07.Â
ÂLeah Shackley wrote her name in the record books to kick off her college career clocking a time of 1:55.25 in the women's 200-yard butterfly. Shackley set a new pool record, replacing the previous record of 1:55.42. Shackley also swam a 50.40 in the women's 100-yard backstroke, recording herself a first place finish. Shackley's performance in the 100-yard backstroke would have been the second place time at 2024 NCAA's, right behind Wolfpack alum Katharine Berkoff. Shackley's performance in the 100 backstroke now sits at the second fastest time in the NCAA just behind Gretchen Walsh of Virginia.
ÂDaniel Diehl also joined the record breaking club, by setting a pool record of his own after he tied his previous pool record with a time of 1:43.11 in the men's 200y IM. Diehl went on to be one of the top finishers in the Saturday in the men's 200-yard backstroke finishing first with a time of (1:40.68)
ÂFreshman, and Olympic Bronze medalist David Betlehem went to work Saturday morning in the men's 1000 yard freestyle. Leading the competition, Betlehem set a pool record with a time of (8:47.17) slashing the previous record by nearly two seconds.
ÂJunior, Kyle Ponsler, creeped past his ASU competition setting a pool record in the men's 400 IM. Ponsler, swam a tight neck and neck race to the very end scratching a first place finish with a time of (3:46.23).
