BATON ROUGE – The Wolfpack softball team fell on day one of the Purple & Gold Challenge hosted by LSU. The wind was an added challenge for the Pack throughout the day as it blew north around 15 mph. The Pack struggled to get runners in scoring position throughout the afternoon.
NC State 0, LA Tech 2
Freshman pitcher Madison Inscoe opened the morning by striking out the first two batters faced. After the Pack ended the top half of the first, they took their shot in the batter's box. With two outs, Amanda Hasler stepped up to the plate and recorded a single up the left side to get the Wolfpack's first hit of the afternoon. Both teams went scoreless through the first inning.
Tech recorded back-to-back hits that later advanced on a wild pitch to get into scoring position. The Wolfpack's defense was unbeatable as shortstop MaKayla Marbury grabbed the third out to end the Bulldog's chances of taking the early lead.
To open the offensive efforts in the bottom of the third, sophomore Taylor Ensley slammed a ball out of the park that went foul at the last second, forcing her back into the box. The Wolfpack's offensive efforts came to a quick end as Tech got three outs in three batters faced.
Both teams remained scoreless through the fifth and the Bulldogs scored in the top of the sixth to take the 1-0 lead.
The Wolfpack started the bottom of the sixth with a bang. Junior Haley Haislip singled to left field with one out and freshman Gabi Wilson entered to pinch run. Center fielder Rebecca Murray took the box for the third time and singled up the middle, allowing Wilson to reach second. Marbury took her third shot in the box, lining out to right field and Tech recorded a double play after getting Wilson out at second.
Louisiana Tech increased the score to two in the top of the seventh. The Bulldogs recorded a bunt to the circle, bringing the runner on third home. Right fielder Ellie Goins caught the third out after Tech thought they had a home run, but she got it right in front of the fence to stop them from increasing the score.
Inscoe finished the afternoon with four strikeouts and only one batter walked through seven innings. She added three assists, while Hasler and Haislip each tallied five putouts.
NC State 0, No. 14 LSU 12 (5 inn.)
The Tigers wasted no time taking a lead as they scored four in the bottom of the first. Freshman pitcher Rylee Wyman walked one batter in her single inning in the circle.
Sophomore Hannah Goodwin recorded the Pack's first hit as she was the lead off in the bottom of the first. She doubled to left field and later advanced to third, but was left on base to end the inning.
The Pack brought in a pitching change in the second and had Aisha Weixlmann enter the circle. NC State held LSU scoreless in the second and third innings.
To start the top of the fourth, Hasler singled up the middle and Wilson entered to pinch run. Goodwin took her shot in the box and lined out to third base – the Tigers recorded a double play after getting Wilson out at third. Katlyn Pavlick was then hit by a pitch and Libby Whittaker was walked to get two on base for Haislip. She struck out and the Pack finished the inning with two left on base.
LSU scored six more in the bottom of the fourth after singles by Georgia Clark, Raeleen Guitierrez, and McKenzie Redoutey allowed runners to score. Weixlmann faced eight batters in the fourth and finished her time in the circle with two strikeouts. Lucero and Gore both entered the circle in the fourth in hopes of stopping the Tigers scoring drive. LSU finished the inning with eight runs, five hits, and three left on base.
Ensley recorded her second and the team's final hit of the game in the top of the fifth after singling to right center field.
