Softball splits day two in Baton Rouge
BATON ROUGE – The NC State softball team split day two of the Purple & Gold Challenge. After falling to BYU in game one, Aisha Weixlmann and Katlyn Pavlick paced the Pack in game two to top L..A Tech 5-0.
NC State 0, BYU 1
The Wolfpack struggled to gain momentum offensively throughout the meeting.
Freshman pitcher Madison Inscoe picked up her first strikeout of the afternoon in the second inning when she got Hailey Marrow looking. She then grabbed an assist on the next play when she threw to Taylor Ensley, who covered first, to record the third out.
The Pack picked up two outs to start the offensive efforts in the second inning. Sophomore Taylor Ensley singled through the left side and senior Libby Whittaker hit an infield single to put two on base for Inscoe. Inscoe was walked by Cougars pitcher Alyssa Aguillar and junior Haley Haislip entered the box with two outs, bases loaded. BYU stopped the Pack from getting on the board as their first baseman caught the foul ball hit by Haislip.
To start the fourth inning, freshman right fielder Ellie Goins picked up the first out after a diving catch in right center. The Pack got the next two Cougar batters out to end the top of the fourth.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that someone got on the board. BYU scored one after a double by Martha Epenesa brought Maddie Bajarano home to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
Whittaker led the Pack off with a single down the left line in the bottom of the fifth and junior Gracie Roberts entered to pinch run. Roberts later advanced to second but was left on base to end the inning.
The Cougars were unable to add to the board, forcing the bottom of the seventh inning to be played.
Inscoe finished the day with three strikeouts in seven innings and no batters walked.
NC State 5, LA Tech 0
Redshirt-junior pitcher Aisha Weixlmann started off with a bang as she struck out the first two batters faced.
The Pack tallied three hits by the end of the third inning, while Tech had none. Freshman Amanda Hasler was the first to record a hit as she singled to center field in the first. Haislip and Hannah Goodwin also recorded hits to help the Wolfpack's offensive efforts.
In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Katlyn Pavlick stepped into the box. After having one pitch thrown her way, she drilled a ball over the left field wall, bringing MaKayla Marbury home with her. The Pack took the 2-0 lead, their first of the afternoon, to end the fourth inning.
The Wolfpack increased their lead in the fifth after Rebecca Murray led off with a single. Goodwin hit a single right after and Hasler was walked to load the bases. Ensley popped up to right field, allowing Murray to advance home and make it 3-0, despite picking up an out. Whittaker then singled to right field but Hasler was tagged out on her way to third. The Pack ended the inning with three hits and one run scored.
NC State kept the momentum going in the batters box as the sixth inning allowed them to increase the score once again. With one out, Haislip entered the box and singled to Tech's shortstop. Pavlick stepped up to the plate for the third time and drilled her second ball over the fence to record her second homer of the day and eighth of the season. The two RBI hit increased the Pack's lead to five. Ellie Goins then bunted to get on base and Murray singled to left field to advance Goins to second. The next two Pack batters were caught out, ending the Wolfpack's scoring run. The sixth inning ended with four hits and two runs.
