BATON ROUGE – The Wolfpack softball team fell to No. 14 LSU, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Purple & Gold Challenge.
Sophomore Hannah Goodwin led the Pack off with a single to left field to start the offensive efforts. The next three batters were out, ending the attempts to take an early lead.
LSU wasted no time as the first batter recorded a hit and later scored on a wild pitch. Karli Petty later singled up the middle with two outs, allowing another to get home, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
Senior Libby Whittaker was walked by LSU pitcher Ali Kilponen to start the second inning. After two outs, Haley Haislip singled to left field to tally her fourth hit of the weekend. With two on base and two outs, graduate Rebecca Murray grounded out to second and the throw just beat her to first. The Wolfpack added a second hit to the board to end the top of the second.
The Tigers added three more to the board in the bottom of the second after back-to-back doubles brought someone home. A fielding error by the Pack also allowed one to score, giving the Tigers a 5-0 lead after the second.
The Pack added another hit to the board after Goodwin led off with another single to start the third. Right after, freshman Amanda Hasler was hit by a pitch for the 11th time this season. Goodwin later advanced to third while Hasler took second, but the two were left on base at the end.
Freshman pitcher Madison Inscoe pitched 1.1 innings for the Pack before Aisha Weixlmann entered the circle. The redshirt-junior helped facilitate two outs and picked up the first strikeout of the afternoon for the Pack. Her time in the circle was short (1.2 innings) as freshman Rylee Wyman entered in the fourth.
NC State held the Tigers scoreless in the third and fourth innings, but back-to-back homers in the fifth pushed them out to a 7-0 lead.
To start the sixth, freshman Wynne Gore entered the circle and the Pack recorded a four up, three down inning to force the seventh inning. Haislip singled down the left line to lead off and with one out, Hasler was hit by a pitch for the second time. Ensley then singled to third base, but Murray was tagged at the plate to end the game.
