#Pack9 Outlasts UNCW 11-8 in Extra Innings

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The NC State baseball team improved to 16-5 on the season Tuesday night with an 11-8 victory in 10 innings at UNCW. The win marked the Pack's 10th victory in its last 11 games over the Seahawks and its fifth victory in the last six contests at UNCW's Brooks Field.
The Wolfpack struck first in the top half of the second inning when the lineup connected for four straight singles to manufacture a pair of runs. Will Marcy kicked off the scoring effort with a two-out single up the middle followed by a single from Chase Nixon to advance Marcy to second.
Wilmington native Parker Nolan then drove home Marcy with an RBI single through the left side that moved Nixon to second, pushing NC State ahead at 1-0. An infield single from Kalae Harrison reloaded the bases for the Pack before LuJames Groover III then added another run by drawing a full-count walk that scored Nixon and doubled the NC State lead to 2-0.
UNCW (13-8) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when UNCW's John Newton smacked a two-out double to left field that drove home two Seahawks to knot the score at 2-2.
NC State retook the lead in the top of the fifth frame after a leadoff home run from Groover III moved the Wolfpack ahead 3-2. The Pack tacked on another run when a bases-loaded walk drawn by Nixon sent home Payton Green to extend NC State's lead to 4-2.
UNCW responded in the ensuing frame after they began the bottom half of the fifth with four straight hits. A leadoff triple from Bryan Arendt followed by an RBI double from Taber Mongero shrunk the Pack's lead to 4-3, while a double from Brock Wills in the following at-bat retied the score at 4-4.
After Andrew Shaffner surrendered a double to Dillon Lifrrieri to put two runners in scoring position with no outs for the Seahawks, Rio Britton was called on in relief to register two outs while Carson Kelly was brought in to record the third out of the inning.
A two-run sixth for UNCW gave the Seahawks their first lead, moving ahead 6-4 after back-to-back RBI singles from Wills and Lifrieri.
NC State rallied from the two-run deficit in the seventh inning, posting four runs just before stretch time to retake the lead at 8-6. A one-out single from Green started the rally for the Wolfpack, followed by back-to-back singles from Eli Serrano III and Marcy, the latter of which scored Green to cut the Seahawks' advantage to 6-5. Serrano III later scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 6-6, followed by Carter Trice drawing a walk and later advancing to second on a passed ball that moved Marcy to third.
Harrison then continued his hot streak, sending a two-out single to left field to plate two runs and give the Wolfpack an 8-6 edge.
UNCW later forced extra innings on its 26th out, as a two-out, two-RBI single from Wills plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to extend the game. Wills' base knock scored Trevor Marsh and pinch runner Mac Gillespie to tie the score at 8-8, forcing extra innings in a game between NC State and UNCW for the first time since 2008.
The Wolfpack made quick work of the Seahawks in the 10th, plating three two-out runs in the top half to retake the lead at 11-8.
After Harrison drew a full-count walk and Groover III was awarded first on a hit-by-pitch, Cannon Peebles reached base on a fielder's choice which sent Harrision home as a result of a throwing error by UNCW to give NC State a 9-8 advantage.
Jacob Cozart then kept the scoring effort moving with a single to right field that scored Peebles. Cozart later scored on an RBI single from Green, stretching the Pack's lead to 11-8.
Justin Lawson surrendered a leadoff hit, but he proceeded to strike out three straight UNCW hitters to claim the victory, improving his record to 3-0 while Brett Banks took the loss for the Seahawks.
