CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The NC State baseball team dropped the series opener 4-1 to Boston College on Friday at Harrington Athletics Village.
NC State (16-6, 2-5 ACC) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth when Chase Nixon delivered a pinch-hit single into right field before Eli Serrano III and Dominic Pilolli each were hit by a pitch. Boston College closer Andrew Roman, however, worked out of the bases-loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
The Wolfpack put multiple runners on base in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings but was unable to cut into the Eagles' three-run lead. A 6-4-3 ground-ball double play ended the Pack's threat in the sixth, while a pair of strikeouts kept NC State off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh.
Back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the eighth put runners at the corners. The Eagles (16-4, 5-2 ACC) once again worked out of the jam, throwing out LuJames Groover III at home on a fielder's choice before a groundout to third base ended the eighth. Roman then struck out the final two batters of the evening to help the Eagles record the win in the series opener.
Boston College struck first with two outs in the bottom of the third when Travis Honeyman hit a three-run homer to left field.
Jacob Cozart helped the Pack answer in the top of the fourth, doubling down the right-field line to open the inning. Back-to-back groundouts from Payton Green and Will Marcy brought home Cozart for the Pack's opening run of the game, trimming the Eagles' lead to 3-1.
The Eagles extended their lead to 4-1 behind Peter Burns' RBI single to center field, bringing home Patrick Roche from second base after Roche opened the inning with a double.
NC State's defense cut down two runners at home plate in Friday's setback. Marcy fired a dart from right field to home plate to cut down Burns at home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, keeping Boston College's lead at 4-1. The Pack then ended the bottom of the eighth with a 2-4-3-2 double play as Serrano III fired to Cozart at home plate to tag out Honeyman at the plate.
Logan Whitaker allowed just five hits over 6.2 innings, striking out five batters in his sixth start of the season. John Miralia, Andrew Shaffner and Win Scott combined to throw 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, scattering just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
Cozart led NC State with a three-hit performance, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Henry Leake moved to 3-1 on the season, while Whitaker fell to 2-2. Roman recorded his fourth save of the season behind two scoreless innings to conclude the game.
