Wolfpack Moves to 7-0 With Second Straight Weekend Sweep
RALEIGH – Contributions from freshmen on the mound and at the plate helped the NC State baseball team record a 7-1 victory over Belmont on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park, moving the Wolfpack to 7-0 on the season behind its second straight weekend sweep.
Freshman left-handed pitcher Dominic Fritton impressed in his second-career start, going 6.1 innings with six strikeouts to set the tone for the Wolfpack. Fritton scattered just five hits and allowed no walks to earn his first-career pitching victory in an NC State uniform.
The Wolfpack (7-0) opened the scoring in the second inning with a pair of home runs to take a 3-0 lead. Will Marcy blasted his second home run of the season to left field for a two-run shot, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead. Freshman Cannon Peebles then stepped to the plate and recorded the first home run of his collegiate career with a solo home run to center field.
NC State extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth behind a bases-loaded RBI single from Trevor Candelaria before Payton Green battled back from an 0-2 count to record a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0.
After another scoreless inning from Fritton in the fifth, freshman Eli Serrano III entered the game as a pinch hitter and blasted his first-career home run to right field. Serrano III attacked the first pitch of his at-bat to line a solo home run into the Wolfpack bullpen in right field.
NC State tacked on another run in the sixth inning when LuJames Groover III doubled down the left-field line, bringing home Kalae Harrison to make it 7-0.
Belmont (2-6) recorded its first run of the game in the top of the seventh on a solo home run from Blake Barton. Barton's home run marked the first run the Pack had allowed since the fourth inning of Friday's 11-4 win to open the series.
Justin Lawson entered the game with one out in the seventh inning and retired the final eight batters to seal the victory. Lawson struck out four batters and did not allow a walk in the dominant relief appearance.
The Wolfpack has opened 7-0 or better in back-to-back seasons and for the fourth time in the past five seasons. Sunday's win also marked career victory No. 1,193 for NC State head coach Elliott Avent.
UP NEXT
The Wolfpack continues its eight-game home stand with a pair of midweek games at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Pack welcomes Longwood on Tuesday and Radford on Wednesday. Both games will be broadcasted live on ACC Network Extra and will begin at 3 p.m.
