• NC State's most recent over Virginia was also at Dail Soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack recorded a 2-1 win over No. 14 Virginia on Sept. 24, 2009.
• NC State won eight of the first 10 matchups in the series, holding an 8-1-1 record against the Cavaliers dating back to the first matchup in 1984.
• Two of NC State's past three matchups against Virginia at Dail Soccer Stadium have ended in 0-0 draws. Virginia, however, notched a 2-1 victory in the most recent matchup in Raleigh on Sept. 26, 2021.
• Virginia leads the all-time series 29-13-4.
NEW RECORD (AGAIN) AT THE DAIL
One in, one out. That was the attendance situation on Saturday for NC State's record-breaking crowd against Tobacco Road rival and top-ranked North Carolina. Before halftime, Dail Soccer Stadium hit fire marshal capacity at 3,972 fans. Fans outside the stadium were only allowed in if fans inside the facility exited for a one-to-one swap.
The record crowd of 3,972 shatters the previous record set on Sept. 7 against Michigan State (2,506). On that night, the first 200 students received Barbie-themed T-shirts for "Barbie Night" at Dail Soccer Stadium. That new record shattered the previous total (2,023 against UNC on Oct. 1, 2010) by over 450 people.
Overall, NC State ranks 11th nationally in cumulative attendance with 9,940 fans attending games at The Dail this season. The mark ranks third among all ACC programs, while the Pack's average attendance of 1,657 ranks 10th nationally and also third among all ACC teams.
STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
NC State's sustained success has garnered national attention as the Wolfpack ranked No. 15 in SoccerWire's 2023 list of Top 50 Current NCAA Women's Soccer Programs. The rankings were based on a combination of final United Soccer Coaches Polls and Rating Percentage Index (RPI) from each season, with bonuses awarded for NCAA Tournament qualification and College Cup victories.
A TOUGH SLATE
NC State faces a challenging schedule this fall with eight of its opponents featured in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25. Two other opponents, Virginia Tech and Rutgers, received votes in the poll. Two of NC State's five remaining regular season opponents are ranked inside the Top 11 of the United Soccer Coaches most recent poll released on Tuesday.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia, who was selected third in the 2023 Preseason ACC Coaches Poll, enters Sunday's match with a 5-2-5 overall record and a 0-2-3 mark in ACC play. The Cavaliers opened the season with an eight-game unbeaten streak, recording five victories and three ties before a 1-0 home defeat to No. 1 North Carolina on Sept. 21. Maggie Cagle and Meredith McDermott pace the Cavaliers with six goals apiece, while Cagle leads the team with 16 points. Goalkeeper Cayla White has started 11 games in goal for Virginia this season, posting a .851 save percentage with three shutouts.
UP NEXT
NC State travels to Miami for an ACC road matchup against the Hurricanes on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Wolfpack's matchup in Miami is set for 6 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
