RALEIGH - For the second-straight game NC State baseball (21-11, 8-7 ACC) managed to capture a thrilling ninth-inning walk-off win, defeating Boston College (15-19, 3-13 ACC), 4-3, on Thursday evening in the series opener at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Â
Despite the Eagles plating the first run of the game in the first inning, the Wolfpack responded with runs in its half of the first and in the second to take the lead. In the sixth BC tied things up to force the game to come down to the final three outs, and the Pack managed to pull off another walk off victory on a Devonte Brown bases-loaded sac fly to right field.
Â
Travis Honneyman put the Eagles on the board in the first inning when he led off with a single to center field, and after Luke Gold laced a one-out double to put runners in scoring position he crossed home plate on a wild pitch.
Â
NC State quickly tied things up though in the bottom frame when LuJames Groover III started the spark with a one-out double to left field, and then a wild pitch followed by Tommy White's sac fly to left field brought him home.
Â
Groover extended his hit streak to 19 and reached base streak to 22 games.
Â
J.T. Jarrett belted a solo shot to left field in the second inning to give the Pack a 2-1 lead, marking his third home run of the season.
Â
The Eagles looked to tie things back up in the third when it loaded the bases up with one out, but a clutch double play started by Jarrett got the Pack out of the jam.
Â
In the fifth the Pack added a run when Payton Green led off the side with a triple to right field and came home on a passed ball. Green has hit a triple in back-to-back games after not tallying one prior to this week.
Â
Starting pitcher Logan Whitaker had a stellar outing, going five complete innings and surrendering one earned run on five hits while allowing just one walk and fanning a career-high seven batters.
Â
BC used three hits in the sixth to knot the score at 3-3 when Lucas Stalman delivered with a two-out 2-RBI single to left field with the bases loaded. The Eagles looked to bring the go-ahead run across in the seventh with runners at the corners and one out, but another double play started by Jarrett ended the threat.
Â
After three scoreless frames, the Pack managed to pull off its second-straight walk off win in the bottom of the ninth. Soles tallied his second hit of the game with a leadoff single, and then after Green drew a walk and an error allowed Jacob Cozart to load the bases Brown hit a deep fly ball to right field to send Soles home.
Â
Soles went 2-for-3 on the night and has continued his hot streak at the plate, as he has tallied 17 hits in eight games.
Â
After Justin Lawson and Baker Nelson strung together 3.2 innings of solid baseball on the mound, Chris Villaman got the final out of the Boston College ninth with a strikeout to earn his second win of the season. In each of his last seven appearances Villaman has earned a decision.
Â
NC State and Boston College will meet for game two of the series Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. The contest will be broadcast on ACCNX and the Varsity Network App.
