RALEIGH – No. 4 NC State baseball (8-4) suffered a 6-0 loss to Northeastern (6-5) on Sunday afternoon in the series finale between the teams at Doak Field at Dail Park.
This was the first time since April 23, 2017 (1-0 loss at Boston College), that the Wolfpack had been shut out in a regular season contest. It was additionally the team's first time since March 3-5 2006 (vs. UCLA) that it suffered a series sweep to a nonconference opponent.
For the third straight game, Northeastern scored first when Jeff Costello led off with a home run to left field. The Huskies then doubled their lead in the second on Luke Beckstein's bases-loaded sac fly to center field to make it 2-0.
Corey DiLoreto hit the second home run of the game for the Huskies in the third with a solo shot over the left field wall, and then three more runs on four hits, highlighted by Mark Darakjy's RBI single to right field and Spenser Smith's two-run infield single, and an error in the fifth extended Northeastern's lead to 6-0.
NC State looked to get on the board in the seventh when Josh Hood drew a one-out walk and Will Marcy hit a two-out single to the third baseman, but a fly out to center ended the threat. In the eighth the Pack once again managed to put multiple runners on base, but was unable to drive any runs in.
Payton Green turned in the team's lone multi-hit performance of the game, while four others tallied a base hit. On the mound Canaan Silver and Carson Kelly combined for four shutout innings, yielding just three hits while tallying six strikeouts. Kelly's four strikeouts in his outing matched his career high.
NC State returns to action Tuesday when it makes the trip to Greensboro, N.C., to face UNCG in a midweek tilt. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Additionally, there will be an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.
