#8 NC State Beats Penn State 4-0 in Opening Match of ITA Kickoff

RALEIGH – No. 8 NC State women's tennis (4-0) opened ITA Kickoff Weekend regional action with the 4-0 win over Penn State (2-2) to move one match closer to an ITA National Team Indoor Championships berth.
After taking the match against the Nittany Lions, the Wolfpack moves on to the winners' side of the draw. A win in Sunday's championship match would send NC State to the 16-team national team tournament for the third time in the last four years.
NC State put together a strong showing in doubles to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Wolfpack took back-to-back 6-2 wins on court two and then court one to win the doubles point for the fourth time in as many tries this season.
The Wolfpack then made quick work of the Nittany Lions in singles play, going up a set on the first four courts on.
Eighth-ranked Jaeda Daniel was the first to take care of business, defeating Sofiya Chekhlystova by a 6-4, 6-0 score at the top of the flight. Nell Miller followed shortly after and also blanked her opponent in the second seat, beating Alina Lebedeva 7-5, 6-0 on court four.
With the match score at 3-0, both freshman Priska Nugroho and sophomore Abigail Rencheli held a set advantage and went into second-set tiebreakers hunting for the clinch. Rencheli was able to get the job done first, winning 6-5, 7-6 (2) over Yvonna Zuffova to secure the team's victory.
Play was halted upon the clinch, but both Sophie Abrams (6-1) and Amelia Rajecki (4-1) were looking solid through the first few games of their matches.
NC State will move on to play either Wake Forest or Northwestern in the championship match of the Raleigh ITA Kickoff weekend bracket. First serve for that match is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
