RALEIGH – NC State women's soccer (4-5-2, 0-3-0 ACC) dropped a 2-1 result on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium to No. 5 Virginia (10-1-0, 3-0-0 ACC).
The Cavaliers struck first with an early goal, but Denae Antoine tallied her first career ACC goal to tie things up heading into the locker room at halftime. The second half was tightly contested between the two teams with six shots apiece (three on goal), but Virginia was able to capture the win with a set piece goal in the final minute of regulation.
This was the Wolfpack's fourth consecutive contest against a team that is ranked or receiving votes for the national polls. All five of its losses this season have been by a one-goal margin, and three of them have come down to the final minute of play.
Virginia opened the scoring with a Sydney Zandi goal in the ninth minute off a Haley Hopkins assist. Zandi's strike from above the 18-yard box was deflected by a Wolfpack defender and rolled into the bottom left corner of the net.
Antoine scored the equalizer in the 40th minute, marking her first goal of the season and first career goal in ACC play. Mia Vaughan, who was credited with her first career assist, played Antione the ball just outside the 18-yard box, and Antoine then took a touch and fired the ball into the upper right corner of the goal.
Virginia scored the decisive goal with 57 seconds left in the match through Taulia Staude when she finished off a corner kick scramble in the box and headed the ball in from two yards out. The corner kick was taken by Alexis Theoret and she found Diana Ordonez, who headed the ball goalward but hit the post and dropped to Staude.
Freshman goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta followed up a career night in goal on Thursday with another strong outing on Sunday with five saves, which are the second-most for her in a single match.
NC State will close out a three-game home stand Friday, October 1 when it hosts Notre Dame. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium, and the match will be broadcast on ACCNX. The contest will additionally be the program's Alumni Night.
