It is the Wolfpack's fifth series win this season, including its third straight, and it is on a four-game win streak while winning nine of its last 10 games.
Thanks to aggressive base running by Tyler McDonough in the first inning the Pack struck first. After reaching on a dropped third strike wild pitch and stealing second, he stole third and then scored on the throw down to first following another dropped third strike.
Pitt answered in the bottom frame to take a 2-1 lead as a Wolfpack error and David Yanni single up the middle with a runner at second plated a pair of runs.
Jose Torres knotted the score at two in the second after leading off with a double and moving to third on Terrell Tatum's bunt single, as he crossed home plate on a 6-4-3 double play.
In the third, a double by McDonough down the left field line and single by Butler to right field on two outs put NC State back in front, 3-2, but the Panthers quickly knotted it back up in their half of the inning when Sky Duff scored on an RBI groundout to second.
Tatum led off the fourth with his seventh home run of the season to left field to give the Pack its lead back, but it was short-lived as a Jackson Phinney two-run home run to left field gave Pitt a 5-4 advantage after four complete.
Vojtech Mensik tied the score at five in the sixth when he led off with a double down the left field line and scored on Devonte Brown's RBI single to left field, then Butler's 10th long ball of the year in the seventh gave the Pack a 6-5 lead.
In the ninth the Pack pushed three more runs across to add to its lead, as Butler and Tatum managed to pull off the double steal at the corners on two outs and Mensik crushed a two-run homer to right field.
The Panthers tried to rally back in the final frame of the game as they scored on pinch hitter Matt Tarabek's bases-loaded single and a 6-4-3 double play, but Evan Justice once again shut the door to pick up his sixth save of the season and second of the series.
