PITTSBURGH, Pa. – NC State baseball (26-14, 17-13 ACC) earned a dominant 10-3 win in its series finale with No. 16 Pittsburgh (22-16, 16-14 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. With the victory, the Wolfpack completed the series sweep and collected its fifth-straight win.
NC State continues to be one of the top road warriors in the NCAA as it improved its record to 15-3 away from home.
The win was a complete performance thanks to strong pitching by Matt Willadsen (4-2) and Chris Villaman along with a season-high five home runs which plated seven of the team's 10 runs.
For the third consecutive game, NC State struck first as Austin Murr tallied a leadoff single, advanced to second on a groundout and then scored on Jose Torres's single up the middle. The Panthers tied it up in its half of the first though on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
In the second, Devonte Brown went yard to center field for his ninth homer of the season and fourth in his last seven games, and then Jonny Butler and Torres both went yard in the third to extend the Pack's lead to 5-1. For Butler, it was his 11th of the year and third in four games, and for Torres it was his fifth of the season.
Torres drove in his third and fourth runs of the game in the fifth when Butler and Terrell Tatum crossed home plate on his one-out double to left center, making the score 7-1.
Tatum belted the Pack's fourth home run of the game in the seventh when he swung at the first pitch he saw and went deep to center field.
Pitt cut into its deficit in the eighth when Ron Washington Jr. belted a two-run home run to center field to make it 8-3, but Villaman entered in relief and struck out the side to limit the damage.
Willadsen put together a strong performance on the mound, scattering nine hits and surrendering three runs in seven innings pitched. He tallied a career-best eight strikeouts in the contest and retired 10 straight batters between the third and sixth innings.
Tatum made it a five-homer day for the Pack in the ninth when he belted a two-run shot over the right field wall to give NC State a 10-3 lead, marking his ninth long ball of the year.
Villaman struck out the side again in the ninth to help the Red and White complete its fourth series sweep of the season. He tallied six strikeouts in his two innings of work.
