
#Pack9 Tops 16th-Ranked Pitt In Series Opener, 3-2

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – NC State baseball (24-14, 15-13 ACC) opened its series against 16th-ranked Pittsburgh (22-14, 16-12 ACC) on Friday evening with a 3-2 victory at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
It is the Wolfpack's third-straight win and eighth in its last nine games. It continues to be one of the top road warriors in the NCAA as it improves its road record to 13-3.
The Pack got on the board first thanks to Austin Murr's two-out RBI single to left field with runners at first, but the Panthers answered in the bottom frame with a pair of runs on Ron Washington Jr's. leadoff homer and Ramon Padilla's two-out single up the right field line with a runner in scoring position.
Luca Tresh drove in the game-tying run in the fifth as he scored McDonough from second with his double to left field. In the seventh, Murr, who led the team with a 3-for-4 performance, scored on a wild pitch after leading off with a triple to right field to plate what proved to be the game-winning run.
The Panthers looked to tie things up in the eighth as it managed to get runners in scoring position with two outs, but reliever Evan Justice got the swinging strikeout to end the threat.
Reid Johnston (6-2) tossed a gem of an outing, as he went 7.1 innings and surrendered two runs on eight hits while fanning nine. His nine strikeouts were one shy of his career best.
Justice picked up his team-leading fifth save of the season, which also ranks second among the ACC in conference play, as he threw 1.2 hitless innings and struck out four to shut the door on the Panthers.
